Right now i have i3 6100 and a cheap mobo

I am thinking between the i5 8600k or the i7 7700k/8700k with z370 mobo

I am gonna be using it for gaming and also i wanna use it as work station
Will the i5 8600k be enough without having no treads besides the cores

Shouild i get the i7 or the i5

For games the i5 will be just fine it really depends on what you are doing for your workstation tasks. What kind of programs are you going to be running?

System Specs

CPU: I7-5820k   MOBO:Asus X99 strix   RAM: 32gb corsair Dominator Platinum 2666mhz   GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980TI  PSU: Corsair RM1000i

Budget/Country?

Any gaming? If yes what resolution/refresh rate?

What's your current GPU? and the rest of the PC set up?

i7 8700(non K) > 8600K IMO

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

If you're gaming at 1080p 60hz there's not much reason to upgrade anything right now

If you don't have a budget then 1950X + 1080ti and some 1440p 144hz IPS display

Save some money by getting the 8600K, use it to help fund a GPU upgrade in a year or two when the RX 480 (possibly) starts to lag behind noticeably.

genrally i5's don't last nearly as long as i7's

You could however get a a 8700 and that'll be only like 30 dollars more expensive without a CPU cooler

There's no point to replacing an RX 480 with a 1070ti for your 1080p 60hz display

If you're doing video editing probably just save that money for the Ryzen refresh coming soon ish, Hoping on the R7 2700 hitting 4.5ghz this time around.

For gaming, the i5 is enough. However, for a workstation, the i7 would be a much better choice.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I was thinking more to be safe for the future thats why i wanted to get the 1070ti coz when i go back in europe the prices are high as hell for graphics

Get a 8700 and just use the stock cooler. It'll be better than a even OC'ed 8600k.You can even wait for the b series mobos and save even more

Depends on if you want to overclock at all, and if you can afford it.

The K version is going to be a little faster due to increased base clock speeds even if you don't OC it at all. (It's about a 7% increase from the 8700 to the 8700k)

I presume the r7 1700 is also great for gaming but what about temps?

It's fine, same or less power than an i7 8700/K, but it doesn't need to be delidding, the Coffee Lake part would be better for 144hz gaming, Say Ryzen is at 100fps in the average AAA game, CL would be 120+ fps

though you would need an adapter to fit the 212 unless you get the Crosshair 6 I think it is, it has AM3+ mounts for CPU coolers. probably not worth it just for that

Do you have a real budget for all these upgrades? Like an actual hard limit?
