So you want an R9 card huh? TOO Bad

taylorpro

Afternoon fella's. Thought I'd stir the pot a bit on this, as I found it quite interesting. With the massive increase in bitcoin and litecoin prices, AMD radeon cards have been selling like hot cakes in the last week or two, making just about EVERY model of radeon card out of stock; don't believe me? go look. (Full Article: http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2013/12/9/cryptocurrencies-are-causing-shortages-of-amd-radeon-gpus.aspx)

I decided to capitilize a bit on the market, and sold my R9 280x last night, mind you that I bought new for $280 in early October, for $400 on ebay. And it sold in 13 minutes. If ANY of you guys have these cards, and have thought about upgrading, etc, now is the time to list them and get beyond top dollar for them while demand is up. Anyway, I was WANTING to get an R9 290 if I sold my card, but with the shortage on AMD cards seemingly running through the NEXT order of cards as well, they may not even be available. Not to mention the ONE HUNDRED dollar prices increase in 290's (among other cards as well. Full article: http://www.techspot.com/news/54969-demand-for-amds-higher-end-radeon-r9-cards-has-caused-prices-to-skyrocket-but-why.html) from all of the sales and low supply. THAT being said, the gtx 780 is very compelling, now at the same price point of $500, seeing as we haven't seen non-reference designs in the 290/290x class yet.

None the less, I think this whole ordeal will play out rather interesting. If all of the radeon cards get bought by miners, do consumers have slim to no option but to go to nvidia over the holiday season? If amd keeps selling all of their product before it even gets here (Read that article i posted. TONS of backorders) will nvidia raise prices too since they are more or less temporarily a consumer monopoly?

What's your guys' thoughts???

Overclockers in the UK nearly always have them all in stock http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?catid=56&groupid=701&sortby=priceAsc&subid=1752.  R9 series are readily available in the UK and there hasn't been a price increase since launch.

I wonder what my MSI Hawk 7870 would go for.....

Well the 270X HAWK sells for £165 new so you could probably get £110 for your 7870 Hawk.

Probably $175-$225.

I might just put it up for 250 or best offer tonight and see what happens. If it sells awesome if not I don't care.

UK chipping in here

My local retailer has reported a drop in the amount orders for all AMD cards, (I have a friend or two) this shortage is not due to Litecoin, it is due to the fact AMD are under huge capacity from the brand new Xbone and PS4.

This.

I believe this is a large part of it. The Consoles are always sold out too, for obvious reasons.

Why so high when a 270X Hawk is only a little bit more?

Regardless of potential reason, newegg, is sold out of basically every single model of newer radeon card. and according to these soruces, the NEXT order of cards consists of mostly back orders that first have to be filled. again, i cant say the sources are confirmed, but at least in the US, this could be an interesting chain of events

and IMO, it does have to do with mining. Why else would someone be SO hellbent on buying my midgrade gpu that they pay 120$ over what it costs new within minutes of it listing rather than just waiting?

Well I will be purchasing a 280X from a distributor through Ingram Micro. I'll see the prices, see if there is any increase.

That is what I'm seeing

Ok so what makes the new series better for mining?

its not just the new series. most of the higher 7xxx series are sold out at newegg as well.

Seems like this may just be a US issue. But none the less, for us here it may cause some issues.

goddamnit, I'd sell my 7970, but I wouldn't have anything to replace it while I waited for 290 prices to deflate. I have a second 7970 sitting in my dorm room ,but that's locked till Jan 2. maybe they'll still be expensive as hell then and I can still capitalize.
