Like, why is this a thing? and why aren't all SSD's like this?

Because enclosures provide protection and mounting holes.

Just now, iHomer said:

how would it mount?

It just hangs from wherever it's connected

Just now, iHomer said:

is it better than other SSD?

Probably not.

The main appeal is that it's cheap as hell for an SSD

seems like a crappy thing to do, just leave it hanging without mounting it.

they seem some cheap SSD that are used, case taken off then re sold for more than they're worth

That's probably what they're doing.

And it'll more likely have problems. But hey, that's just a risk one has to be willing to take.

I'd rather pay the extra £5-10 for a branded one that has an enclosure tbh.

if i was going for an ebay Shit State Dead id probably just go for an as cheap one as possible because the ones with a case are probably just the same crap

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

By ones with enclosures i'm referring to some sandisks/kingstons, can get some of them for only £5-10 more :P May not be the best still, but atleast there's a brand(and warranty) along with them.

I would sure as hell take that risk. I normally keep computers for 12+ years before I get a new one. I was looking at these cheap ghetto SSD's for my laptop that has the worlds worst hard drive, and considering its 8 years old now, I wouldn't want to spend more then $35-40 on it.

Definitely not saying this one in particular is recommended, however reputable SSDs without 2.5" enclosures are common on the market. There is a form-factor for SSD called M.2, most people think these are "faster" than SATA, however all M.2 in and of itself means is that there's no case like a 2.5" SSD and it just connects directly to the motherboard. Some of them still work via SATA. An M.2 SATA SSD can perform exactly the same as a 2.5" SSD. What they actually mean when they refer to much faster SSDs which connect directly to the motherboard is NVMe.
