Starter homelab and nas

Cameron K

Hello I'm ready to get server to use as a homelab. Using it for plex, mc servers and a few other vms. Mostly I'm curious if this seems like a good deal.

Dell r510 2x l5640 hex cores, 32gb, h700 with trays for $380 after shipping

4 Seagate constellations 3tb (raid 10) $264

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAEE3XE0740&ignorebbr=1

2 500gb mx300 (i already have)

Does this build make sense and seem priced right?

Thanks!

Seems like a good deal. DDR3 ECC RAM is pretty cheap to upgrade too. One thing to keep in mind, not many servers support LFF drives (3,5") so make sure yours has LFF drive cages. SFF 2,5" drives are the standard and have been since that R510 was new.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

It is LFF I do need a couple of 2.5 adapters now that I think about it though

Not entirely sure which hypervisor yet, I may try esxi this time. A plex server, some windows instances and a few linux servers for messing with. May use it as a router too.

Get the server first so you can see which orientation the drives need to be in. Some el cheapo adapters don't align properly.
