Whats the spec of it?

Linux OS's will run better on crappy old hardware yes. Mint Cinamon is a nice modern GUI if you know the basics.

Probably gaming or helping technophobes with tech...

Potentially yes, since Linux is far lighter on system resources then windows from what I know.

but don't expect a 10x increase in performance

He is talking about swap.

I'm kinda an asshole. I have to do it.

Anyways, OP, Linux will be more lightweight than XP, but let's be honest: if your PC has trouble running XP, ditch it.

This "virtual RAM" or swap doesn't increase performance at all, that isn't what it is for. It's there to allow you to run stuff that requires more RAM than your device physically has, but since it's not real RAM, it's actually excruciatingly slow. In general it's a good idea to have some, especially on old hardware, but like I said, it won't make your system run any faster.

You can try LUbuntu or XUbuntu. I use them to give old computers a second life.

What are the specs of the computer? Most old computers are just limited by an old, dying HDD. If you have something newer than a Core 2 Duo and more than 2GB of RAM, then yes! Keep it. I am still using old Thinkpads like the X200 and X201, but with upgraded storage (New SSDs compared to the 10 years old HDDs). These are very good machines, specially when paired with a lightweight Linux-distro.
