Ryzen 1700x Build

Zakara

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to upgrade the components in my pc as studying a Games Art & Design degree at university is becoming more taxing on my hardware than I thought.

A Ryzen 1700x will hopefully be at the core of my build, but am mostly wondering if i'll need to upgrade my power supply from my current one.

Current Build:

  • Intel Core i5-3550k (Overclocked to 4.2GHz)
  • ASROCK Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard
  • 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM
  • GEFORCE® GTX 1070 Graphics Card.
  • Corsair H50i Water Cooler
  • Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD
  • Western Digital 1TB HDD
  • Corsair CS550M 550W Hybrid Modular Power Supply

As mentioned above, I'm currently running a 500W supply, but am thinking about going up to 750 possibly even an 850w supply as I'll have to install a few demanding parts.

Here are the parts I am planning to purchase, any advice on whether these are suitable for a heavy content creator would be appreciated :)

Planned Additions:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 1700X 8 Core AM4 CPU/Processor
  • Asus - CROSSHAIR VI HERO ATX AM4 Motherboard
  • Corsair - Vengeance LED 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory   -  (Matches colour scheme)
  • Corsair - RMx 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply   - (Not sure if this is overkill)

Wasn't sure if my CPU cooler is capable either, any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Jack.

I'd replace the PSU not because of wattage but rather because age. If it's about 5 years old, like the rest of the system, I'd use it as a back-up rather than a main.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

You can probably get away with a 650w but i would recommend a 750w. 850w is a little overkill.

Your CPU cooler is fine unless you are going to be doing overclocking, then you might want a better one.

If at first you don't succeed...

Call it version 1.0

You should be fine i think just reapply some thermal paste and wipe down the heat sync with rubbing alcohol

You would be fine with a 550W power supply for an R7 1700X and GTX 1070.

I would be looking at 3000MHz ram or above.
