Asus STRIX 1080ti OC - High Temps?

iiNNeX

Hello,

So I bought a second hand 1080ti Strix OC (1 month old with proof of purchase from a reputable online shop) and have installed it in my Fractal Design Meshify C case. The case has all fan slots populated with Noctuas, running 1200RPM and also has a NH-D15 for CPU cooling.

The CPU is 4770k and is oc'ed to a modest 4.2ghz with 1.18v. Doesn't really go above 65C at full tilt. The GPU however, even in stock form, seems to hit 68-70C when at 90%+ usage. On the Asus GPU Tweak app it is set to OC Mode (although that makes little difference) and in MSI Afterburner it has stock settings. When I overclock it and max the power and temp sliders, add 100 gpu clock and 300 memory, it is stable and runs Firestrike fine but then I can see it as high as 85C, with the fans running between 55-60%. That's extremely high for that card no ? From the reviews online, people get 65-68C under heavy load at 2050mhz+ ?!

My room temp is a bit high, probably 24-26C but that should not be pushing the card in the 85C territory... I mean not everybody has an AC'd room right?

Any help will be highly appreciated, before I RMA the card lol

1. Check if the cards all spin

2. Check fan tachometer, should show fan RPM. At full speed it should be above 3000RPM

I will check when I get home. It should be fine though I mean I could hear them at 60% and when I tested 100% for a little bit it was a Boeing Test Facility :D

Read this however: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?95970-Asus-ROG-Strix-GeForce-GTX-1080-Ti-11GB-OC-Edition

It seems like people with 70-75 under load, especially if OC and in a generally warm room is normal. I just don't like the fan noise above 60% so I might get a waterblock soon at this rate lol

  • 2 weeks later...

Right so reviving this thread again,

Card is running at 78-80C at all settings on default, even if I manually put the fan speed at 60%, doesn't change the temp much. All fans are spinning and GPU self overclocks to 1950mhz as it should (gpu boost average is around there for this card).

I have now bought a digital termometer for my room and it is showing 20.1C, so there is no way this card should be anywhere close to 80C. The case it's in has 6 noctua fans running at 1200rpm with positive pressure airflow...

This is starting to sound like really bad paste job on this, so I might have to take it apart and change all thermal pads and put high quality paste on. Only problem is, I believe that will void the warranty with Asus, a problem EVGA cards don't have... ffs.

I have also checked ASIC quality and it is pretty high (82%) so the voltage required on stock settings is below normal if anything...

Don't see an issue. Mid fan speed, poor case flow and a cpu air cooler as well. Seems completely normal.

Poor case flow? Troll or? Tt is a Meshify C with all fan slots filled with Industrial Noctuas, going at 1200RPMs each. CPU cooler is also noctua with fans spinning at 1200, and GPU fans even at 60% (which is the highest I'd take as acceptable) won't make the card run cooler. The case is optimised with positive air pressure in mind, so honestly it's not that. Nobody runs their shit at 100% mate

Plenty of people run their shit at 100% Done it for years. So if running the gpu fans faster wont effect the temp then its the card, clearly. Send it back if you want low temps and low fan speed.

I'm sure my 540's flow better and have the same fans, had a 1080 strix and had the same temp issues.

Nobody that I know runs their fans at 100%, I want a computer not a jet engine next to me. Running the GPU fans at 100% gets it down to 76C but 2C is barely worth the extra noise.

And I really hope your 540 has better flow, it is twice the size and has a separate chamber! lol The Meshify C is one of if not the best air flowing mid tower out right now, so that is the last thing on my list to cross as a potential issue. I ll try running the card outside the case on an open bench and see what results I get, will prob end up changing paste and pads tho as RMA this time of the year will most likely take a month of not more....

I dont see an issue with those temps. Its about what stock blower coolers run in temps.

That's exactly the problem.

This is meant to be wayyyy cooler. But I think I just found the solution, my exhaust case fans were not running what I thought they were. Had to put the Noctua CPU cooler at 80% as well (which is still stupidly quiet) and now after a heavy overclock on the GPU and 1 hour of Firestrike Ultra stress testing, it's peaked at 69C. 23C ambient temp in the room. Phew.... I knew it was something in there and not the gpu lol

Edit: This is with 120% power target, 90C temp target, +100 on Core and +450 on memory. I get 2068mhz Core clock under 100% load! Not bad :)

So it was airflow.

It was 2 fans lying about their RPM in MSI Command Centre and BIOS! In Speedfan however they showed true RPM which was 246 lol. Now they are at 1200RPM its all good :)

Time to buy that Hero X motherboard and ditch MSI because they are wank,  not the first time i've had issues with them.

Yea I wouldn't run an msi even though they have stepped up their game the past few years.
