Best GPU for 1080p 144hz?

jcoops

The best pairing, cost to benefit wise, is the GTX 1070 Ti which is a 1080 for 1070 pricing... provided that you overclock it.

Second hand deals on GTX 980 Ti are still very valid too.

If you want to play AAA at ultras and what not, the 1080 Ti is needed.

I am FOR SURE not buying a 1080 Ti.  Way out of my budget.  I play games such as Rust, GTA V, racing games, PUBG, etc.

You realize that I wrote more than mentioning the 1080 Ti right? :P

There isn't really much to go over in here, there literally is only 2 companies in the world that makes video cards, you have to pick it either AMD or nVidia, AMD has a solid offering for a more budget orientated 1080p experience with the RX580 but if you want more power to ensure the 144hz you're kinda obligated going with either the 980 Ti or 1070 or 1070 Ti, there literally is no other graphical processing chip to go to, Vega 56 is not a good purchase for gaming.

an rx580 or 1060 6gb would run close to 144fps in most current games, but might not hold that high unless you turn down some settings.  my rx480 can push about 140fps in overwatch with most of the settings on high or ultra, but I game on a 60hz monitor so I limit it to 120.  even then I occasionally see drops into double digits from time to time.

How's this?

980 Ti

1070

1070 Ti

1080

1080 Ti

If I were to get anything right now, it would be a 980 Ti for the cheapest, but I wouldn't get a 1070 if the 1080's gonna be the same exact price.

Are you fine with adjusting your graphical in-game settings? if you are then the 980 Ti is a clear winner here, keep this in mind:

While the video addresses it about 4k gaming the very same rule could be applied to 144hz 1080p... you don't need TOO MUCH if you're cool with tweaking the settings.

Now if you do want to max as much as possible the settings then the 1080 is the better deal... it really depends on what you're after.

Yeah I definitely do not want ultra.  Only setting I keep on ultra in my rig right now is my view distance on PUBG.  I'm looking high to very-high, would a 980 Ti suit that?

yes it would... make sure your CPU is up to the task as well though.

My 1080 does not do 144hz at 1080p in PUBG, but  that's an unoptimized mess of a game atm. It sits at about 100-120.

That's what I figured.  I have a 6700k paired with a 960, and I run it 70-80 at medium settings, which looks great.

i7 6700k is still among the top 5 fastest gaming processors so you're fine CPU wise ;)

PUBG is still an unfinished game and optimization really is shitte but the 980 Ti will give a huge performance gain for you over the 960.

I'd go with a 980ti for 2nd hand, don't think the fury x is much of a choice anymore due to vram.
For current gen I'd go with either a 1060/580 or 1070/v56. Again these of course come down to prices, here in the uk the v56 is a bit overpriced.
For higher end the v64 can be found for a bit less than the 1080 so thats a good buy at the moment.
