What's next for my machine?

Hey LTT,

Been getting the itch to upgrade my machine or do a system rebuild or something, you know how it is.

My current specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K

CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i
Motherboard MSI X99A Gaming Pro Carbon

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3200MHz C16 (Though I cannot get it to run at 3200, funny set of errors when I try so for now 2133)
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro 1TB
GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti Hybrid

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX
PSU: EVGA 1200 P2

I'm really mostly looking to get a new board and chip if I upgrade and perhaps an SSD, was eyeballing the Intel Optane 900P's.

Does anyone have any thoughts? I mostly game so my video card is pretty much as good as I can get it for now. I like having a processor capable of handling lots while also keeping my per core performance as high as I can.

What can you suggest? A new build is not out of the question but I want to make sure I get a real upgrade if I do.

Better monitor, peripherals, something like that. Your PC is pretty much top end, no real reason to spend money now. Save it for when you'll get more of a performance improvement. Optane 900 looks good on paper but honestly you're better off getting an NVME drive if you want a small increase in speed.

I don't think you NEED to upgrade, your system is already quite fantastic.

IF you absolutely had to upgrade, I would go with A new CPU, MOBO, and RAM then do SSD when you're craving a new build again.

Ryzen 7 sounds like a good upgrade, as does coffee lake! What kind of platform were you looking at?

The only real upgrade for you would be a 7900x or better on intels side or 1950x on the amd side.  I would take a look at @done12many2 and his recent battery of tests between the two.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Those are some solid comparisons, I think I would be leaning on the Intel Platform if I went that route, though the cost of those chips is up there. Would the 7820X do me any good?

32 Gb of ram,

Better peripherals or network gear

maybe get some super efficient noctua fans

Other than that the only upgrades you could do is Sleeved cables, Nicer case and lighting.

I have 4 Noctua 140mm iPPC's and 1 Corsair ML120 in white on my GPU radiator, if I were to go with the ram add on, I would want to remove the current set entirely and try to get a set of 3000MHz 4x8's and get the XMP Profile to behave. What route could I go as far as better networking gear? Currently have a consumer grade wireless router from TP-Link, Its an AC2300 but I cannot recall the exact model right now.

If you are considering a 7820X a J batch 5960x will perform very similarly, not require a delid and be significantly cheaper

Embarrassingly, I’m not familiar with what J batch means.. ?
