So I have an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ system, and the mainboard's only video-out port decided to die on me. I started looking around for other graphics options, the GeForce 210 for example. But a friend said they can give me an old GT 620 they had lying around, and I wondering if I would see any kind of bottleneck since the GT 620 is quite a bit newer than the 210. I'd prefer there to not be any bottlenecks, although if they won't impact anything at all, that would be preferred. It should also be noted that my mainboard only has support for PCIe Gen 1, which is why I was looking at older cards in the first place.

If necessary, I can go out and pick up a 210 for ~30 dollars from my local Micro Center, I was just curious if I would have any problems using something as new(relatively) as the GT 620. I really want this system to run, but I need a dGPU for that to happen. If necessary, I could also look around for a 9800 GS or something along those lines if even the 210 is too new for this system.

Hmm. By the sounds of it you don't entirely know what a bottleneck is. It doesn't cause less performance in the system, it just means you won't get the most use out of the graphics card. So if it's free, it's still a better choice than the 210, even if it is bottlenecked by the CPU.

Thanks, I know the basic theory of bottlenecking, just not the full details haha.

Have a nice day/night!

I'm not great at explaining things, but yeah. If the 620 is free, definitely the right choice. :P

Have you seen the LTT video on bottlenecking? I think there was a TechQuickie thing on it..
