Intel Core i5-2500K problems, help requested!

Go to solution Solved by scottyseng,

Hmm, that is odd. The stock speed should be 3.3 GHz and turbo boost of 3.7 GHz.

If you have a good cooler, you should be able to push it. I would really just start playing with voltage. Sandy Bridge overclocks very easy. It's hard to say how much your CPU can be pushed because every CPU is different. You might be able to get 100-200MHz or more though at stock voltage (However, keep in mind by default motherboards kind of overdo it with voltage with auto for OCing)

I had my old 2500K going at 4.6GHz at 1.4v. I currently have a 2700K (I got it for$130, why not) last summer and it runs at 4.9 GHz at 1.45v.

Yeah, your CPU just needs an overclock and it'll keep up fine (Well, maybe not BF1, that game is brutal on CPU)

So, I'm having some questions regarding my pc, well mainly my cpu... So I've tried overclocking it two times using a guide for my cpu and motherboard. When I'm done my pc doesn't want to boot the OS, so I thought I'd just run it with the stock clocking so I set the values back to it's original state. I checked my cpu when I got back on my pc and it said it was running my i5-2500k at 3.10 Ghz, so I went back and checked in the BIOS and it was apparently set to x31 so I just changed it to x33 to get it to 3.30 Ghz, but this time, after changing it to x33 it is currently running at 3.60Ghz? Also, how far do you guys think I could push my cpu with the clock speed without having to change anything else?
What could cause this? Now that it's currently running at 3.60Ghz it seems that performance is worse than at 3.30Ghz. I didn't change any voltage or anything when I went back and set it to x33. Is it safe to run it at 3.60 Ghz without changing anything else but upping it to 3.60? I would like to OC my cpu at some point because right now I'm not getting the FPS I want in games like BF1 and PUBG with my i5-2500k and GTX 1060 6GB... I'm currently getting about 55 fps and sometimes drops to around 45 in BF1 (playing on medium) and in PUBG it's usually around 50-70 depending on where I am in the game (playing on very low). Btw my motherboard is a GA-P67A-D3-B3.

your BCLK is not set at 100, its set at 109 I would set that back to 100 and set multiplier to something like 38 or 39 and check temps.

My BCLK is set at 100OMHz though...

then its turbo kicking in, disable turbo and set a manual clock speed.

Sorry I’m really bad at all this when it comes to overclocking and BIOS settings, but what would be your recommendations for these? And is the clock speed and CPU voltage all I really need to change? I was thinking maybe I’d set it to x40 or so...

Yeah, I would really only play with the vcore (I'd leave it alone for now) and CPU multiplier. I would leave the BLCK at default of 100 MHz (You can overclock this too, but usually it's not worth the effort).

I would try x40 and stress test it. I use Intel Burn Test myself (Make sure you have CPU-Z or HWinfo or HW Monitor open) to keep an eye on what the vcore is and what the temps are.

If you want more just slowly start turning up the voltage. The safe limit is 1.4v, the really pushing it safe limit is 1.45v though. I wouldn't go past 1.45v without really good cooling / understand you're really pushing the CPU past safe limits.

Also, I would update the BIOS if you haven't done so yet.

Do you mean x40 without changing the vcore or trying it with a change of the vcore?
