Hi,

I have been hearing this electric sound in my headphones (Audio-Technica ATH-M50X) for quite awhile. It has been easy to ignore until today.

When i fired up WoW couple of hours ago i started hearing this loud coil whine like sound through my headphones and also from inside the computer. It got worse when i opened up some in-game menus.
Also my second monitor started making these shadowy waves rotating from top to bottom.

I opened up the side panel and it seems like the sound is coming from the GPU. (GTX 770)

I tested it with a different GPU (GTX 1060) and it still made the sound but not as loudly.

I cap my fps at 60 in WoW. I cap my fps at 144 in LoL and my computer doenst seem to make the noise almost at all.

What should i do? Replace PSU or MOBO?

Specs:
GTX 770
i7-3770k @ 3.5
16GB DDR3 @ 1600
ASRock z77 Extreme6
Seasonic 660w P-660 (XP²) modular ATX-Power Supply, 80 Plus Platinum, semi-passive

Edit:

I have now swapped the PSU and GPU and i'm still having the sound occur. What should i do now?

Change the mobo?

this might be a temporary fix for you, get a USB powered sound card. Something like this and the coil whine shouldn't follow you to your headphones. This is only a temporary fix until you get a new card. Coil whine is usually from your GPU and you mentioned that it goes nuts when you are at a game menu because usually the GPU load will shoot up to 100% as it is easy for your GPU to get super high frames in menus. Sad to say, once you got the coil whine its there to stay. The only thing you can do is to mask that noise.

(My advice are bad, and they are mostly from personal experience. Take it with a grain of salt)

Just cap your fps, I think coil whine happens when the GPU is pushing out more frames than the monitor can take.
