I need some clarification and some help on what kind of headphones to get. My budget is 160-180 and im looking for a pair of cans that are great all around gaming and music listening, i play a lot of games ranging from competitive games (a lot of csgo, something that can help me pinpoint enemies) , to adventure, to laid back games. To amazing sound producing headphones that can deliver all range to high, mids, and bass leaning towards a little bit more bass

Thank you!!

I can work with open or closed back headphones

I think the kingston hyperx cloud core 2 is one of the hot favourites. there is also the steelseries arctis 7 (wireless) supposed to be great.

But if you're looking for a phenominal music experience then the Audio Technica M50x will be amazing. however no mic so youll need to pair these with an Antlion modmic 4 or 5 which will hit $190-230. Some people also prefer changing the earcups to something much softer, but the audio quality is unquestionable.

Sennheiser HD558 + modmic is always mt go to recommendation.

Basically you cant go wrong with it. You get a good headphone for the price point and a top notch removable mic trust can be used again when you get a better headphone

IM not sure the 558 will pick up on the in game sounds as well as gaming headsets. senheissers are known to use a lot of manipulation to skew audio in favour of the headphones (for music particularly). Not a bad thing, but perhaps not the best for the intended use in this case.

Antlion mod mic 4 or 5. theres a $40 - $50 price diff. check out reviews and pick. both are really good. you can pair that with a dedicated headphone like th Audiotechnica M50x or even the M30x. What headphones were you using before this?

You told me that HD558 is not for gaming then proceeded to tell OP to get M50x. It's thanksgiving weekend not april fool

Im not trying to make anyone a fool. If you aren't aware, there is a diff in how headphones are made to sound. Sennheisser tunes most of their products to deliver a great music and listening experience not necessarily the most accurate true sound reproduction. M50x' are a set of studio monitors designed to give you a really true sound without skewing the sound too much to make it "more pleasant". so you tend to hear all the details a lot better which will help relatively better in gaming.

Ultimately a good gaming headset may well serve the purpose way better as CyberFern0 pointed out with is reference to the corsair headset. But I haven't ever heard them, so I didn't comment.

I think u misunderstood about something.

Yes u are right gaming headset are tuned for games rather than for music listening but that doesnt mean that an audiophile headphone can't do the same.

I'd choose M40x over any other closed back gaming headphone.

Sadly they are much more expensive than Cloud Core thats why i ended up with this headset.

What OP want for Competitive games is to pinpoint enemies location and that means u'll need a larger soundstages and u can get that from an open back style headphone like HD 558 has or semi open headphone.

and about using studio monitoring headphone for gaming they'll likely has a flat sound signature u dont want a flat headphone for gaming or music but its good for monitoring because u'll be able to listen on every frequency more or less equally and with a well trained ears u can spot the issues and correct them.

So why i pick M40x then? Because its better and cheaper than M50x

M40x has a good bass, good mid and not great on the high but its clear and soft.

They are flatter than M50x and strangely they sounds good for gaming with a lil bit of EQ tweaking.

A lot of people hate the M50x and prefer M40x because :

-Overpriced

-Branded as studio monitoring but has this sound signature

Spoiler

AudioTechnica_ATHM50_Graph_FRCompare.jpg

That is a lot of bass boost

-Some even say its struggled with high frequencies

Now before someone or audiophile in this forum correct me please have mercy as i am still young and stupid. xP

Look, the moment you said M50x is accurate sounding, i've tagged you with the "fool" tag.

You either only have M50x as your headphone, or just not experienced enough in audio

Lol. You're really proving to be ignorant. the entire audio editing world revere the headphones for their audio accuracy. but im sure you in your indefinite wisdom are far superior to everyone else. I don't know if you're just trying to sound smart or something... because you're only really making a fool of yourself.

Are you blind or simply doesnt possess the ability to read frequency response? Or perhaps for you some youtuber saying it's accurate represents more objective data compared to an actual chart?

Look and compare the audio frequency response of M50x, HD558 and HD800s. An ACTUAL monitoring headphone that's used for audio mastering

great. frequency response is the only indicator of detail. *slow clap*. I am not running down the senheissers. I am saying that they provide a much better music listening experience, the m50x perform better in replicating the original sound with minimal skewing. if youre still too thick headed to get it then nvm.

I'm okay with the separate mic and audio

I would go for something like a dt880 ("neutral", semi open) or dt990 (kinda v-shape, good amount of bass, open back, but the treble can be a little bit too much sometimes) and modmic, it might be over budget to $200 +/-.

But if you can get philips X2 & vmoda boompro, its a superb gaming headset that will satisfy all  your needs. X2 is a fun headphone to use for casual gaming and listening to music, open back and quite lots of bass.

EDIT: due to your budget, have a look at this: HD558 + modmic, this is the most safe bet from all, ok bass, smooth, good headphone for all-around entertainment.

Not enough detail in that I'm assuming. I currently use the cloud core. I like the mic quality. Audio is decent but doesn't quite give the detail that you're looking to get. I think the cloud 2 might be a decent upgrade for you. But i think the Steelseries arctis 7 maybe MUCH better. Perhaps people on the forum can confirm. I haven;t heard them myself but heard good things.

Not sure about that. Haven;t heard them myself. But do check out some reviews/comparisons. It may help. And we can wait for someone with the headset to respond :P or till someone gives a rock solid testimonial. Becuase audio is super subjective at the end of the day, people's idea of clarity also differs greatly unless they've tried a lot of products.

Just going to throw this out there, I own HD558's and they have been fantastic great build quality and they sound great..  Only downfall I would say would be them being open back, unless you have quiet surroundings it can be annoying if someone has a TV on near you etc...

In terms of gaming performance, I have played a ton of CSGO on ESEA also PUBG and I feel like I'm cheating when I'm using the 558's it is so easy to pin point where someone is you can usually pre-fire corners... the amount of times iv been called out for "hacking" is hilarious...

Now I also have a very flat sounding set of headphones the NVX XPT 100 / BRAINWAVES HM5 these are closed back and also work great for gaming and music listening but they are not quite as good for footsteps/positional audio but they still do a damn fine job.

In the end I would say just about any NON-GAMING related headphone be that the M40x, XPT 100's, 558's, HM5 etc with a mod mic will be much more enjoyable than any all in one solution.

Also down the road to improve your audio experience even more I would suggest you get a DAC/AMP combo such as the FX-Audio Dac X6 or SMSL M3, especially if you get a headphone with a higher impedance.

good luck op

Cheers

Well if you want an all in one solution, wireless and easy I'm sure the steel series headset would do just "fine" but if your looking for more of an "experience" the DT990's and 880's or anything posted above will probably put a bigger smile on your face especially for music, positional audio will be great with the open back style of these headphones as well.

BUT you will absolutely need a AMP/DAC for those headphones (DT Series) as they are (correct me if im wrong) at least a 200 ohm impedance which your computer on board audio would not be able to handle well and you would not be utilizing the headphones to the potential they have.
