Not necessarily a problem, per se. I donated a Core2Duo e8400, 8 gig RAM system to a friend, and it had a decent GPU for the longest time. Now, it's time to upgrade once more.

I'm thinking that I want to put a GTX 1050 Ti into it, the lack of a necessity of the PSU upgrade makes it desirable. I know it will probably be bottlenecked but I don't think that's much of a problem. The current GPU in it is a GT 730 (the good version).

I AM getting a 1050 Ti, any retail models to recommend?

They're really all the same, just get whichever one you like the best.

The only difference is their clock speed out of box, which you could just overclock your self.

Should possibly just save the money for an upgrade to a Raven Ridge APU whenever they drop, that's a super old platform you should get off of ASAP on the CPU side

There is no good version of a GT 730 lol

The thing is, he doesn't do ultra graphics or newer games too much. Apart from money, he's got very little interest I'm pretty sure. He has a 1080p monitor I know that though. He plays TF2 a whole lot so I think he'll be alright with it..

That's where an APU would be perfect, especially when they have Ryzen cores. Mostly getting on AM4 gets you an upgrade path. But seriously replace that CPU ASAP.

easy 60fps here in TF2 and this is the last gen stuff just on AM4

I'm on the fence of buying this. In the video he's using low graphics for all the settings on TF2, and it's not a demanding game. Would it be worth it?

It will basically get the job done until Raven Ridge APUs come out. We currently only have benchmarks for the mobile version of the R5 2500U which is going to be limited on memory compared to desktop chips among other things.

https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd-raven-ridge-2500U-benchmarks

"In 3DMark 11, at 1280 x 720, the Ryzen 5 2500U outperforms its older RX460 cousin by 6%, and just misses the mark on Nvidia’s Maxwell-based 940MX. This second-tier Raven Ridge APU performs 24% slower than the green team’s laptop-leader graphics chip - the Pascal-based MX150.  "

The major befit being that it gets you on AM4 so there's an actual upgrade path for the system.

What if I got this CPU?

The A10-9700?

Better?

No the A10s aren't worth it as they don't add much of anything over the A8, both are 4 cores, not sure if they have the same number of GPU cores, but the APUs are more memory limited than anything.

They exist basically to get you on AM4, and with a decent board like the ASrock Pro4 you'll be set on the platform for upgrading to Raven Ridge potentially, or getting an R3 1200 + $100-150 GPU sometime down the line.

They also exist to basically "just work" since they're new and you don't have to go parts hunting for used hardware.

Here's some last gen APU benchmarks as well, the A10s weren't much faster then either. I'd expect performance to be pretty close or better on the newer stuff.
