I know that not allot of people agree with pirating and stuff but I herd Windows Blue got leaked and i wanted to try it before I go and buy a copy and find out its shit. i pirated Windows 8 and it was so bad it was seriously unusable for me i couldn't get past installing my video drivers. So I'm thinking of trying the leaked copy of Windows Blue or waiting until its available for purchase and trying it then. What do you think I should do and I doubt it anyone knows but do you need Windows 8 before you install Windows Blue?

PS: I don't want to hear about pirating is illegal or stupid whatever I know.

Using alpha OS, is not only very unsafe for your data, but it will definitely be sucky. Microsoft is expected to release a public Beta of Windows 8 update project name Blue at Microsoft BUILD event in summer. (June 26)

Before you go in Windows 8, you need to know the following, and it's the ONLY way to enjoy Windows 8 and like it.

-> You need to be open to new ideas and concept, and willing to try something totally new.

-> You can't compare with Windows 7 right away. You are used to thing that dates back since Windows 95, and that has changed. Obviously, like new Windows features and changes in every new version of Windows, you are slow at first, but then you are fast, and in most cases, you are faster to work with than before.

-> The learning curve is steep compared to previous version of Windows. It will take 2-3 weeks of serious usage, to get the hang of it.

If you do the above, you'll be like the many who enjoys Windows 8. If you are being an old grumpy man, than you'll be like those who continues to stick to XP (and I don't mean companies.. I mean individuals with powerful computers, where they completely limit it, without them knowing, due to XP, as this is what they believe is better than any other OS)

I know its a different OS and I understand that but what i can't understand is why most applications just simply don't work or why Microsoft would push the Modern UI on desktop users. I do understand that I should keep a open mind and yes I do somewhat like the Modern UI but as a desktop user and I have been running Windows 7 for some time I can't stand the fact that Microsoft would toss out all of what made Windows good i mean they couldn't even keep Aero theme because of battery usage but you would turn it off and use Windows basic theme.

I know its a different OS and I understand that but what i can't understand is why most applications just simply don't work

All applications and games work under Windows 8, if they work under Windows 7. If an application doesn't work.. it could be using XP and Vista+ API codes, where some XP APIs used no longer existed or has changed. As its unable; to identify Windows 8 in it's code to tell it which API code to execute, it might default to XP, and hence not work. This problem is not new. Every version of Windows has this. This is why you have compatibility mode, which, if you pick Windows Vista or 7, when the game or program asks that version of Windows the system has to execute the right set of API code, it gets "Windows 7" and executes the right code.

The rest it's driver issues. Make sure you have the latest drivers of your system. Don't use the Windows default drivers, or those in Windows Update as they are, most of the time, not the latest.

why Microsoft would push the Modern UI on desktop users.

You need to have the same experience between computers. This is basic GUI design.

If I use Windows 8 on my desktop, the experience should be the same as on my friend computer with Windows 8, and my parents computer.

Imagine just the fact of helping someone... "Open the Start Screen and click on this and that...., OR, if you have the Start Menu, you should open this and do this and that"...

And then you'll have OEMs changing these settings... and then you have the user go "I don't know what is a Start Screen". And then their Windows 8 tablet will have a different experience as well.. it's a mess. Look at Android in the early days, and look at Linux. It's confusing and hell for everyone.

Desktop PCs and laptops are "dead". Their market is changing. Laptops are used for people that types a lot (which you don't need to twitter,m and Facebook updates), so it's reversed for workers that needs a computer on the go, or power users. Desktop PC are now getting for power user. They are becoming work stations. OEMs are slowly pulling the plug on making Home desktop PC. Soon it will be only gaming and workstation.

However, the desktop might adapt and evolved. Imagine having this on your desk (just, obviously lower end, no super fancy buttons on each side...)

You have a normal height adjustable monitor, but you can put it down flat over your keyboard and mouse, and now you can:

-> Do math, Physics, algorithms design, planning, sketching, drawing, graph by hand.. all tasks that cannot be done on the current computer setup easily.

Be in a math class environment, teacher talks.. try and write math notes with a laptop. Good luck.

So, this, in my mind, could be the next evolutionary step on the desktop computer, where touch and digitize pen input (notice that I said digitize pen... not the crap pens from the Nintendo DS or iPad), will complement the keyboard and mouse. And perhaps, in a work environment, it can solve many health related issue from using the computer, like back problems and carpel tunnel syndrome.

I do understand that I should keep a open mind and yes I do somewhat like the Modern UI but as a desktop user and I have been running Windows 7 for some time I can't stand the fact that Microsoft would toss out all of what made Windows good

Microsoft is not tossing the desktop. A number of improvement was done on the desktop mode in Windows 8. They could have made a Task Manager for Metro.. but didn't... they decided to make one for the desktop. They improved multiple display support, finally. They improved the text rendering engine, and interface engine of the desktop, which are both independence from ModernUI. If they did all this work to throw it away, that's not smart thinking. No programmer and developer likes to see their work be trashed after a few weeks. It kills moral. Also, it's very costly, in business sense.

I know that Windows 8.1 shows that, based on the leak, that Microsoft is dropping the desktop as they added a bunch opf features and moving thing on the Modern UI interface. But the reality is that Modern UI wasn't done. If you had a tablet right now, powered by Windows RT or 8. You would need to switch from the desktop to Modern UI all the time. Try using the desktop on a 1080p display in 10inch screen format. Everything is ridiculously small, and even with the digitize pen it's hard to pin point on buttons, which appears super tinny. Yes you can increase the DPI and solve your problem, However, many programs that you use have never need tested for high DPI, so icons are ugly, the interface breaks, and so on.

i mean they couldn't even keep Aero theme because of battery usage but you would turn it off and use Windows basic theme.

Actually, Aero was initially kept. This was supposed to be the theme of Windows 8:

But people complained non stop, on how it doesn't match Metro (at the time), and needs to be updated. So we have what we have now.

You notice the start button. This was complained a lot about.. hence removed. The problem with the Start Button, is that if you do this:

desksb.png

Then accessing the Start Screen with the button, is hard... you can't just slide your move to the bottom left corner of the screen anymore.. you need to be precise to hit the button that would about where the file explorer is located on the task bar, on the above picture.

and if you did this:

desksb2.png

Then what? No Start Button... this inconsistency confuses the user... this point was raised a lot.. and hence it was removed. This is why Microsoft just ignores people complaining, as the initial idea just didn't work at all.
