Hi
I'm helping a friend build an APU-based cheap computer. Something that would greatly cut the cost is the operating system. He doesn't do much gaming, so I suggested going to Linux. However, there are some other queries I have.

Can someone tell me linux software that is a good replacement for the following: Microsoft Office, Adobe Fireworks, and any video editing application. Also, which distros would you recommend for someone completely new to Linux?
Thanks! (Really sorry if this is a duplicate thread or posted in the wrong section. I'm very new to forums in general).

the only issue he would run into is that he needs more ram

OP ever thought of installing Win7/8 without the key? @whatthe_fuzz has done it before and it worked fine for him

I'd use Mint 15 Cinnamon all the way it's has a package installer, flash and all that stuff pre-installed, as well as being styled like windows 7 there's even a aero theme.

Hi!

Almost all of the Linux based distros comes with the LibreOffice package and they can completely handle Office file formats.
Instead of Fireworks, your friend can use the program called Pencil. Of course you can find a lot of Video Editing software for Linux: Avidemux,Cinelerra,Kdenlive,Kino,OpenShot,Flowblade,etc....

For a newbie I prefer Ubuntu or Linux Mint. These distributions are extremely good supported systems, fast and easy to use.

LibreOffice

Cinelerra, Kdenlive, Openshot

Plenty of options for Firework: Inkscape for Vector graphics, Gimp and Paint.NET for raster. Both are perfectly fine for web development graphics.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. It seems Linux has more alternative programs than I thought at first (I mostly use Fedora as a C++ coding environment, nothing more).

This helped a lot too. Thanks.

Mint 16 with Cinnamon. Mint comes with flash, java, libreoffice, and a few other multi media things. As for alternatives, kdenlive I've heard is good for video editing. Not sure about fireworks, but jump on the mint irc chat and ask around there.
