Hello!

So I currently have a i7-7800x (LGA 2066) and earlier today I looked at some i7-8700k (LGA 1151) benchmarks... and as I can see, there is a big increase in performance.

My question is: is it worth it changing my platform and getting a 8700k?

Thank you

Are you satisfied with your current rig's performance?

YES

You're probably fine. Sure, there's some differences but it's good enough.

NO

Can you bear the performance difference? Or do you really need those frames?

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

I always felt like the 7800x was kind of a bad choice and I really don't know why I kept it.

I would try to sell it now and wait for when the holidays start to buy CFL.

Well lets say it like this, if you have the money for it then maybe try and sell your CPU and MOBO first and then buy a the 8700k with a new Motherboard.

But to be honest i don't really think that you will see that much of a performance increase in just Games after you switched for the new CPU. I don't know really at what resolution you play 1080p, 1440p or 4k but if you are playing at 1440p what i hope otherwise the hardware you have is really overkill for 1080p. But then if you go further up the Resolution scale it is more GPU than CPU dependant, and the CPU you have should make really good work for you for 5 or more year's without a problem. Maybe in 2-3 years you can worry about a new GPU for gaming but your CPU should do just fine.

What GPU do you use and what Resolution and refresh do you game at?  Is your 7800x overclocked?  Did you overclock the mesh?  Ram?  The 8700k "upgrade" may not benifit your setup that much.

One thing to consider is that you are leaving the platform with the best upgrade path and going to a dead end one.

Looking at the benchmarks the thought of going from my 7820x to a 8700k crossed my mind, but at my resolution and refresh (3440x1440 100Hz) I very seriously doubt I would see any real difference.

It's a tough call.

You just made me remember the upgrade path is better where I'm at. I think I'll reconsider all that because of the future CPUs on that platform.

EDIT: Oh and for the OC... I always fail...
