So I recently bought a brand spankin' new CPU, the Intel Core i5-7000K LGA 1151.  Now being a self-taught amateur I didn't realize I have a LGA 1150 motherboard so I messed that up bad. Now here's the conversation piece. Would it be cheaper, to buy a nice LGA 1150 CPU like the Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad Core and keep the mother board, OR would it be cheaper to and make more sense for the future to buy a new, more future-proof, mother board and upgrade from DDR3 RAM and LGA 1150, to a much nicer motherboard with LGA 1151, and DDR4 RAM?? I am using the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 LGA 1150

Very Respectfully, The Amateur.

imo, it makes far more sense to just pick up a 4790k, as it'll end up being less expensive and perform better.

Okay, I don't have to worry about the LGA 1150 being outdated in the next 1-2 years?

most likely not, as LGA 1151 will become just as outdated, as Coffee Lake isn't supported with Z170/270

4 hyperthreaded cores is still plenty for games

Technically, LGA1150 was outdated 2 years ago. They won't be making anything new for your socket.

That said, the CPUs you can get for said socket will be fine for a while yet. I'd try and find a used 4790k. No point in buying new, since few places will have it, and if they do they tend to charge too much.

To be honest I was unaware of the forum or how responsive it'd be so I honestly just kind of winged it. I learn best from my mistakes. I don't believe I'd be able to sell it for the original value because I already applied the grey paste to it to put it in the motherboard.

So would it be in my best interest to just pick up a 4790k off of ebay? It's not a good idea to upgrade the motherboard?

Not for a 7500. That CPU is about as good as, if not behind the new i3 8100 which is only $110.

I wouldn't get it from eBay though, very rarely are they sold for a good price. Check out the Reddit Hardware swap, or your local classifieds. Being that Black Friday is just around the corner I'm sure people will be upgrading.

So I can still sell it full value? I bought it off amazon. I doubt they'd take it back.

If you got it from Amazon the company, and not just a reseller, they'll definitely take it back.

Do make sure to check the motherboard's CPU socket for any sort of damages that may have occurred from installing a non compatible CPU before you return anything.

Theoretically, there shouldn't be any damages.. but you never know.

Thank you, I will.
