Wouldn't it be awesome if AMD and/or intel sold CPUs that came without a lid.

They could even just slap a damage caused by user error is not covered under warranty sticker for the likely few itiots who use far too much mounting pressure.

I know IHS hasn't always been the norm, mauve some old fashioned exposes dies would be.

P.S. I know AMD would need to sort out the pesky 3.9-4.2Ghz barrier before it would make much difference for them.

P.P.S. I wasn't sure where to pop this as it's talking about a made up product and not one currently sold by either company directly.

Why? Wouldn't benefit anything on AMD's hardware. When e.g. der8auer delidded his Ryzen 7, he only got a 2C temperature-difference, ie. it was totally not worth doing in the first place.

Direct Die cooling isn't much better than a soldered IHS

I mean it might make sense for intel to sell their chips with the IHS separate if they aren't going to fix their TIM issues.

CPUs used to come without an IHS if you didn't know.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

if products came pre-delidded, that would mean they would be more fragile. Also de-lidding isnt a widespread practice among the PC community. People only delid to get higher performance in high overclock situations, and not all people push their processors to the limits. Having to get a setup that supports delidding is also a hassle

I'll be honest, this was mostly for intel CPUs but I don't want to be seen as biased.

Maybe it would be better if Intel simply stopped being retarded and stopped using shitty TIM instead of solder on $2000 CPUs.

That would indeed be best. AMD's Ryzens and Threadrippers are a perfect example of how little the IHS itself matters to temperatures as long as it's properly soldered-down, and since IHS's reduce the risk of dummies damaging their hardware there's definitely a good reason to have them. OP's request makes no sense.
