Core 2 Quad still good for 2017?

Was just wondering, does buying a core 2 quad in 2017 would be useful? Tryna build for my lil bro under 100$ only for games like cs go, intial d arcade 6aa emulator

Save up atleast $500 and build a system with a Pentium G4560 and a 1050Ti.

It's good enough, though the motherboard model can affect the performance and price noticeably.

If you do, stick to the Q9000 series, preferably something with a decent clock speed as well. The added cache really helps these chips whereas the Q6xxx and Q8xxx are pretty anemic in that department and those chips are generally pretty darn slow. So don't pick a $10 Q6600 just because it's cheap   it'd need a hefty OC to become somewhat decent.

If that isn't lots of money, you should take your own word and at least offer him a half.

Value of money is different with every person.

 

Anyway, c2d is quite cheap, but the most problematic is finding a good motherboard for it.

it's quite useless if you won't or can't overclock it, also last time I check, you will not run CS:GO well enough with c2d.

 

if you want to build cheap computer at least get dual core pentium/celeron based on sandy/Ivy bridge,

usually most 2nd hand seller sell a combo G620/H61 board for $50 or less.

Exceptional case for the Q6600. It's lower FSB means it can reach a higher clock than Q9xxx and Q8xxx on mobo that support the latter two. Therefore it's of similar speed. And no, you dont need HEFTY overclock, just a mild one will do.

It's not the most ideal option but it'll do the job. However, if you can newer is generally going to be better.

Also you havent checked the games the PC will run. Neither are demanding on the CPU. I'd rather spend more on the graphics card than an also outdated G4560

I've been experimenting with my old core2 hardware the last few weeks and have some good data on how effective the old architecture can still be.

 

My QX9650 (or an X5450) can almost match a 4670k with a hefty overclock, and that's being matched up with a GTX 1080.

You can easily get a modded X5450 off eBay for less than $30, and a decent P45 or P35 based motherboard can be had for around $30-50 if you look for them. I've even seen 680i boards going for $20 lately.

 

With a good CPU cooler and a good motherboard a core2quad can do a lot of impressive work.

Well of course in general terms, a newer CPU is going to be better than a C2Q but the point is what'll work best for OP. And for the titles OP listed a C2Q is going to do just fine. Like I said, not the most ideal because it is older but it'll work.

Well in fairness the C2Q is even more outdated. Sooooooo.....

 

But a C2Q and like some midrange GPU from like 2011 or 2012 if you can get it for a decent price could do decently in those titles.

I think I need to explain myself a little for suggesting to save up for a G4560/1050Ti build. Basically the issue is second hand LGA 775 motherboards (including IO shield) are becoming rare and most of the LGA 775 boards you see on sites like Ebay come in these combo units that normally include a C2D which are obviously too slow to anything these days and would require you to spend more money on a second hand C2Q, they don't include the IO shield meaning you have to either botch it or find another one with the same IO layout (normally isn't the case though) and they are way out of their warranties so if it just randomly stops working one day then you are screwed.

To save OP a little money perhaps an i5 2500 could be an option, although it would probably push OP over $100.

But if it were at all possible for OP to do like $150 or so more I think an i5 2500 system would be a little better as a mix between your suggestion of ~$420 more vs being at or under budget and risking those things you mentioned.

For those games Core 2 Quad is more than enough. I still use the Q6600 in my HTPC and I don't have any problems with its performance (1080P videos, web browsing, light games like L4D2 etc).

Good point. 3GHz is easy on any G0 6600. 3.4-3.5 would be more ideal, although cooling cost also comes into play, negating the price difference.

G0 Q6600 can easily be overclocked to 3.0GHz with a stock cooler.

I used to play more demanding games back in the day with an E6850 and a radeon 4870. Get a cheap i52500 with a graphic cards of that generation, be it nvidia or intel and you should be fine.
