So, AM4 could be a option?

It could, but if you want what is cheapest, you'd be better off getting a used i5. If you buy haswell or older, you won't have to buy new RAM. With RAM prices these days, that will save you a lot of money.

Space is pretty awesome.

Not if you want to use DDR3 memory.

Just try and find a 3rd or 4th gen i3. Saying "tight budget" means absolutely nothing when you're not giving us a dollar amount to work with. Tight budget for some is entirely different than a tight budget for others.

That still doesn't give a max budget. 9_9

I am not very informed with Intel CPU's..... I have been a AMD guy forever.... Is that a quad core I3?

For $200 you might be able to get a haswell i5 (4XXX) and mobo but that depends on how the used market near you is.

Space is pretty awesome.

With a budget like that I'd look at getting a 4th gen i5, and some kind of LGA1150 motherboard. I recently gone one with RAM and a cooler for $140 CAD. They should only be cheaper now. If you're looking to spend as little as possible, you could try tracking down a G4560. They can play most titles pretty well. Don't get the i3, it performs the same.

If you have to buy mainboard and CPU you're better off selling your DDR3 memory in order to switch. There's hardly any LGA1151 board out there that supports DDR3. Afaik 6th, 7th and 8th gen Intel Core cpus do not support DDR3 unless it's a very very very weird board. Going for LGA1150 means spending about as much for a used board compared to a new Intel board, good 4th gen chips (talking i5 or i7) do not come cheap as well. Going for a 4th gen i3 is imho not a sensible upgrade.

Depending on you RAM you gould get between like $60 to $100 for those and sell your current combo for a few bucks as well. A decent Ryzen board comes at about $70-80, pair it with a Ryzen 3 for like $120 and get yourself some DDR4 memory. For now you're fine with 8 gigs so just go for 1x8GB. You don't need to go for 3200MHz memory, just get some with known compatibility. You'll end up with like $300 of expenses and maybe $100 of revenues.

I would aim for getting a Haswell i5 part and motherboard....i think you can achieve that for $200.

Let us know what you find, but an i5 haswell (i5-4XXX series) and motherboard should be do-able in that price range I think?

At the very least, an i3, but I don't really like suggesting the 2C/4T i3s unless you only play eSports titles.

What do you plan to play?
