Tight Budget.

Guest

I am looking to upgrade a A8-3850 CPU.... Can you help me with the most bang for the bug? With either a older Intel or AMD build... I am a causal gamer.. But I mostly browse the web.... And that is it... I am looking for the cheaper the better.... Thanks in advance.

If you're looking just for gaming, I'd wait for 8th gen i3. If you have a Microcenter fairly nearby you should be able to get a good deal on a cpu/mobo combo.

Space is pretty awesome.

look for a 240gb ssd, or even a 120gb. will make everything much snappier

then look into getting a used or new GPU, something along the lines of a 750ti is nice

then, you can start saving up $ for ryzen 3.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Lucky you. They don't offer 8th gen bundles yet but they should soon, keep your eyes peeled.

GT 1030 is around a GTX 750ti or so, you're pretty much good for medium 1080p for now.

What makes you recommend R3 over an 8th gen i3? i3 will offer better performance, and with microcenter bundles you'd be looking at maybe $20 more.

EDIT: I just checked, microcenter doesn't offer bundles for i3 or R3 so there'd be closer to $50 difference.

cheaper motherboards, overclockable, AM4 will be supported until 2020, i3 is pretty much only ~5% better in single core.

am in canada so i have no idea how good microcenter is

With a AM4. I will have to buy memory.... I have tons of DDR3 memory. I was looking to use them...

Ryzen and 8th gen use DDR4.

if you want to use DDR3, look into sandy or ivy bridge.

If you have DDR3 already find an old i5 that supports DDR3. If you're going absolute cheapest options, a used i5 should be cheap.

Is AMD not a good option?

investing in AM3 is as good as investing in 8 year old PC hardware

No. Any AMD chip that uses DDR3 (the FX series) is not a good option.

They are old and have horrible single threaded performance (I owned an 8350, it was bad)
