Ultrawide or 144hz?

StayFrostyy

I've been looking into investing in a monitor this year, as my old BenQ RL2455HM is showing its age. Upon doing some research, it seems I have two choices under $250 (rough guess of budget since I won't know until Christmas);

-2560x1080, 60hz, IPS

-1920x1080, 144hz, TN

I only have an RX 480, so I don't know how well I could push ultrawide. I mainly play Overwatch and CS:GO but I was looking to get some AAA games over the winter. I also typically turn V-sync off due to the awful input lag. Which is a better option for my hardware and the price?

overwatch won't work with an ultrawide, so if that is one of your main games, go with a 144Hz

like cryo said, some games such as overwatch don't support ultrawide, you should look into this with the games you play

i prefer quality over speed so i personal go with ultrawide if there is no issue with the game you run; i may just be a slow guy but if you want to be competitive than go for speed

If i dont already use v-sync, will I see a difference in 144hz still?

V-Sync doesn't affect the refresh rate. It simply gets rid of screen tearing by locking the framerate to the refresh rate of the monitor. A 60hz monitor will always refresh 60 times a second no matter how more or less frames you get in game.

Given the options you’ve provided, I would vote the 144hz.

I owned an ROG Swift a few years ago (1440p 144hz) and really enjoyed it. ‘Upgraded’ to the X34 Predator (3440x1440 100hz) and also enjoy it but there are times I miss the extra refresh.  I may move back to a 144hz+ monitor in the near future.
