Needing A NAS

Afternoon all (from the UK).

Yesterday I took delivery of a new 4K camera. I make YouTube videos, and for the past 18 months I've been shooting about 80% of my stuff in 4K on a Hero4 Black. 6 months ago, I got a drone, and also shot 4K with that. Then there's phone footage I have. So as you can imagine, a new 4K mirrorless is just going to add to the amount of data I know have!

I currently edit on a laptop with 1Tb HDD, and like to try and save all raw footage - although I've just deleted about 250Gb to free up some space. I also have a 1Tb external Seagate HDD that I've had for a few years, but only gets switched on now and then to create back ups....

So, what I need to know is, what will I need to set up a home storage solution without costing the earth, and also be expandable?

Try this!

Top features:

- Automatically back up your data and wirelessly access it from any device

- Import everything from USB drives as well as online services

- Access your information easily using the app

- Individual accounts for everyone in your family

Automatically back up your data

Save all your digital content in one place no matter where you are with the WD My Cloud Home NAS Drive. The My Cloud Home Drive plugs directly into your router at home so you can automatically back up the photos and videos from your phone or tablet as well as your computer – whether you have a PC, Mac or both.

Import everything

If you have files backed up on USB memory sticks and external hard drives you can also import everything using the drive's USB port – to make sure everything important to you is easily accessible.

Already store your documents with services like Dropbox, Google Drive or Facebook? Well the My Cloud Drive makes it easy to automatically download from there too.

Access your information easily

Using the My Cloud Home app you can access your files and photos in moments – so photos taken on your phone can be accessed from your laptop, tablet or PC without the need for any wires. You'll never have to worry about forgetting your USB stick or running out of storage space on your phone.

Individual accounts

With a huge 6 TB of storage space, My Cloud Home offers more than enough room for all your photos, videos and files, as well as those of your family members. Each person can create an individual account with private access, so they can store and manage their own content.

I honestly don't know what my budget is just yet.

Considering all the kit I've purchased this year already, I'm gonna have to do some saving... So for the time being, shall we say preferably £500, absolute max £1k

You could buy something like the Synology solutions, but the low end ones are low end naturally
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Synology-DS216J-Bay-Desktop-Enclosure/dp/B01BNPT1EG/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1509725638&sr=1-1&keywords=Synology

Instead if you can find say old PC server parts on the cheap, then you could build a Free NAS box that gives you more options, and if you end up with CPU horsepower or can upgrade to that later, you can also have automated compression happen with the footage to save space and really not lose quality. at least on the final videos.

Also don't buy cheap hard drives

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

If I were you, I'd wait for the HP proliant micro server gen 8 to come back on a cashback deal, they can be had for approx £160-ish (diskless) and usually get around £50-£60 cashback via redemption. Then just put an extra 4GB ECC ram stick in it to bring it up to 8GB ECC ram, and put freenas or other NAS OS on it, or windows/linux whatever you prefer really. Add some HDDs, I recommend either 4TB WD reds or seagate ironwolf  drives, unless you can afford bigger drives, this NAS only has 4 slots, so bear that in mind. And I would also recommend you have a decent backup too, whether or not you also go for redundancy on the NAS... at least backup the files you can't live without losing is how I paint the needfulness of this.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.
