I run 3750mhz at 1.35V, dunno if I can go higher, but my board is like a $70 ASrock with a "6" + 3 phase VRM, needs a fan on the VRM to be stable at higher voltages.

R7 1700*

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Yeah I have a 10 Phase power control. On my Asus. But since its the "cheaper" Ones im not trying to push it so hard to kill the vrm.

Should probably keep a fan over it in any event, might extend it's life

If you really want to overclock then yeah I guess. But thats your decision.

Prime X370 Pro doesnt need any fans.

It would output max 14W in the worst possible case with an 8 core 1.4V 4GHz so this fella is well okay (7-8W) and even if, the heatsink is well capable of dissipating 14W.

@Streetguru The fact you got a trashy board doesn't mean you have to force everyone to stick a fan over the VRM.

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

There are also still no real options for cheap decent VRMs on AM4, most of the ones under $150-200 need fans to run well.

As of today with my 1600, due to the cooler weather and lower ambient temperature, I've increased my overclock to 3.9GHz at 1.4125v. Damn ASRock board with no LLC and massive vdroop. During stress test 1.4125 becomes 1.337 (lowest 1.325) in HWiNFO64. So theoretically, if I had LLC, I should be able to lower my vcore and still be stable, as long as it doesn't go below 1.325 during heavy load. My temps with Noctua air were around 64c.

I think your board calls it VDDCR Load Line Calibration with options Low to Extreme. Try the two lowest options while avoiding Extreme like the plague. You may be able to lower your vcore which also lowers your temps. Make sure Core Performance Boost is disabled. Stress test with Aida64 (CPU/FPU/Cache) for at least 1hr.

It's a six core, no need.

Honestly, I'd love for this thing to fry. It'd give me an excuse to buy a Taichi.

If I were pushing a Ryzen 7 above 1.4v while consistently staying at 100% load for extended periods of time, then perhaps my VRM temps would be something to concern myself with. But with a Ryzen 5, it's just not an issue. I'm sure you've watched the same Buildzoid videos I have.

Even at 6 core it's getting hot, I could take the time to measure it, but you might get a better OC slapping something on it .
