URGENT (presumeably)

Hi there!

So my grandparents, live near the sea, and we had a storm. Their cellar got filled with water, and unfortunately, my grandfathers laptop got wet. So as you can imagine the laptop is dead, but he really wants to save the data, that is stored on the HDD.

So, as a guy, who does not know a lot about HDD's, i'm asking: If there is any chance of saving it, how should it be done.

If you need more info, i'll try finding out more. This is what i know so far

Contact a data recovery center. Don't try to power the drive on, since there could be water in the HDD itself. A data recovery center might be able to recover the data from the drive.

There is a chance of it working, you can dry it out if it has been affected, then plug it in somewhere else, another laptop or a case for 2.5 inch drive. Or if it is soaked i would advise taking it to a data recovery service. Good luck

OK, so i called my grandfather, and he told me that the laptop only had become a little wet in the corner of it. I told him to take out the drive (carefully) and see if there was any water in it. What to do now?

If the laptop only became slightly wet, you might be able to do the recovery yourself.

To check if there is water in the HDD, you can remove the drive and try tilting it slowly, and feel for any weight shift within the drive. If you have the slightest doubt about there being water in the drive, you shouldn't try powering it on.

You don't want to physically take the thing apart, though. There is a certain amount of tension required for the screws and you'd need a special tool to set this for factory settings.

More than that any dust in there and your screwed.

But yea if the hdd is dry just hook it up to your pc and get the data off.
