So I'm building a ryzen 5 rig and I am planning on using g.skill ripjaws 2133megahertz (2x4). I saw that linus uploaded a video and said that you should use 3000megahertz ram, is this really necessary or just a suggestion?

Ryzen is better with faster ram. It's a suggestion but mostly needed if you don't want a horrible experience. Saying from experience.

Ryzen benefits a lot from higher speed ram. 3000mhz is ideal, with higher speeds providing less of a benefit.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

could I mix brands and/or ram speeds, like have 8 gigs of 2133 and 8 gigs of 3000?

No, it will only run at the slowest speed.

In practice yes, but i would not do it as all the ram would run at 2133mhz. If you are strapped for cash, i suggest getting a lower clock kit such as 2666mhz and overclocking.

that's a decent board . Asus b350 prime is also nice. I personally chose the gigabyte b350 gaming 3 for I/O tbh.
