Any z270 should be great.

Don't get a 7700k, get an 8600k instead.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Do this:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

I don't know, sometimes it is a budget vs. performance thing. I have purchased one or two gens back in the past to get enough performance for what I need, sometimes you just don't need the latest and greatest but one or even two gens back will do. Especially with Intel not changing IPC very much in the last couple of generations, yes there are two more cores, but if you don't need more cores...then you can save a couple hundred bucks by going a gen back.

Yes, there is a $~20-50 difference in CPU price and a $50-100 difference in Motherboard price for the same model from the same manufacturer. So there is a price trade off, although if you drop back to the 8th gen i5 it is a much closer trade off. With the difference being closer to $30-50 than ~100-150 or more.

So this would probably be a worthwhile alternative for the OP to look at, if they can squeeze a bit more out of their budget.

Since when were Z370 mobos that much more? IIRC they are around $120-$130 for the cheapest, though I could be wrong.

I did a comparison between the same manufacturer/model of Z270 and Z370 board a few days ago out of curiosity, and the major manufacturers that I compared (MSI, ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte) all have the same model number at the two chip set levels with about that price difference. Yes I agree that if you go for a lower end Z370 you can get a cheaper board, but then you can also get a lower end Z270 and have the same price difference. So the $129 Z370 will have an equivalent $79-89 Z270.

You have to look around but yes I have found them. The list is usually $100 or so but I have found them with $20-30 rebates or "store discounts" for the lowest end of the Z270 boards. And these are MSI, Gigabyte and ASRock boards mind you not no-name brands.
