Cloud storage solution for a year away.

Go to solution Solved by Yannik,

First of all the sad news. Didn't got the D850 (my Nikon dealer probably wouldn't get it in time for my flight), went with the D810 instead. Already love it.

Now to the Topic - I went with a cloud solution. Or to be more specific, my dad got me a few terabyte on their office server (Which is connected to the german university internet network, which means gigabite connection *Yeah, I guess?*). So yeah, thanks for all your help!

So, on January 8th I'll be sitting on a plane to New Zealand. There I'll roughly stay for a year (Work and Travel). My Laptop only has 1TB storage and my soon to be D850 isn't known to make small RAW files. And to only rely on external hard drives would be a misstake I made a few times to often.

So what cloud storage solution would you recommend to backup for photography files (RAW; edited and exported photographs; Photoshop files)?

Maybe look into Cloud Storage or (if you feel like you can handle it) hosting your own cloud. OwnCloud is what I use.

This would require you to rent a server though

So is the rest probably

I own a Lenovo Yoga 910. And even if I would upgrade it would still be a risk.

I would just get a bunch of 2.5in sata hdds and a usb adapter

maybe 4 of these (depending on how much you need)

and an adapter like this

That would be an option. I'll look into that!

I'll live out of a bagback for a year. So my space is pretty limited. I also own quite a lot of hard drives (I don't like to lose or delete files). And the problem with hard drives is that they break easy. Because they would be in my bagpack, which is on me almost all the time. And if I fall down they'll probably break.

they are not that fragile, and you could get a carrying case for them like this one

What if he looses the backpack? Or the content get stolen? New hard drives won't help for that.

Don't recommend hard drives when he specifically ask for cloud storage/something else.

The cheapest option is probably if you could set up your own server tbh. Sure you loose some redundancy but if you have that + HDD you have your storage in two places, where one is ”offsite”. You could possible rent a server as suggested above and in that case you get good redundancy.

But tbh there is no good cloud storage options for a decent price. Dropbox is good but costs a fortune, google drive is kinda meh in my mind.

Really its hard to find cloud storage that offers plans larger than 1TB of storage. And we all know as photographers 1TB is easily filled up. Especially if you do some video, large photoshop composites or shoot with a highres camera as the D850.

I’d guess 20k images would easily fill up 1TB if you shoot lossless 14bit as they are said to be around 50mb each. That is just the raw files. I don’t know how much you shoot but I would need 3TB each year with file sizes that large. (Then I count in some storage for edits and lightrolm library and so on)

1 year?  Just use external drives, and always have a duplicate or triplicate.  Or get a RAID box.  For exported stuff which are usually JPEGs or PNGs, you could probably use something like Flickr (keep everything private) though I wonder if you can still get a "Pro" Flickr account which has unlimited storage.

If you are in a location with fast upload speeds, use Amazon Cloud Services.

If you're there for work, keep one backup copy on external drives/RAID box at home and a second copy at your work place or something.

I'll be living out of a van. My only Internet will be free Wifi in hotels and Starbucks.

Ouch, still I would recommend multiple external drives then.  And perhaps you can mail/ship duplicate copies back home or at least to some local depot or something for storage.  I was even going to recommend getting a deposit box at a bank...

Not sure how fast internet speeds are in NZ.

I would simply use hdds and upload RAW files of good images to onedrive when I find a reliable connection. You dont seem to have a choice anyway, you'd be stuck at a starbucks for 2-3 hours just to upload the equivalent to a single roll of film of 850d RAW files!

The banks I know require a domestic address and or a banking account at the same bank.
