PSU: is it necessary to have a fan and casing?

Can I have a PSU circuit board only? Is it necessary to have its enclosure and fan?

 

Intention: try to reduce the form factor of desktop without compromising motherboard size (features).

You need the fan in order to promote airflow, since the PSU will overheat otherwise.

the case is also basically a necessity -- don't open up a PSU unless you know what you're doing (you could die), and it's really not a good idea to take it out of the case, since the PSU case is grounded, and you probably don't want to take that away from your PSU.

Casing for PSU is crucial. Without it it can cause shorts at best, killing people and starting fires at worst. Same reason why we wrap electricity wires with plastic. You wont want electricity to go anywhere it shouldnt.

 

There are fanless PSUs, but with larger heatsinks to compensate they arent small. Go for SFX models instead

Because they use the actual aluminum (conductive) casing of the device as their PSU I think.
