Planning SFF build for 80% gaming and 20% recording music.

Have:

Enthoo evolv itx (PH-ES215PTG_BK) $75

SanDisc 240 gb SSD $75

Plan on buying:

7350k $130

Asus strix z270i $130

HyperX 2400 8gb $80

Corsair cx650m $50

1TB hard drive $50

Not sure, looking for insight:

Gtx 1070?? ~$450?

240mm aio?? ~$100

Does this seem like a good build?

Go easy on me, I'm a n00b.

Do not buy the i3-7350K with a $100 AIO. Be smart and buy a i5-8400/R5 1600 and use the included stock cooler.

What's your budget? I can make a new build for you if need be.

No reason to get 7350k. Better to get 8400 + 1060/1050ti depending on your resolution. 7350k doesn't really make sense anyways. A lower clocked i5'll beat it in benchmarks any day.

Who makes the HDD?

For cooler I'd get an SFF Noctua one.

Specific model of SSD?

Want to know which mobo to get?

On the right track.

go for an i5/i7

16GB RAM is the recommended amount for gaming

the 1070ti is supposedly coming out soon, you reckon you can wait for that? I'd say wait, if not Zotac gtx 1070 8gb mini seems to be quite popular on pcpart picker.

I'm not too familiar with AIO's so i won't make any recommendations. But regarding anything to do with fans, i recommend to factor in noise from fans. I made the mistake of buying fans that looked nice and was good at getting rid of heat BUT were loud. After a little over a year with them I did not like them whatsoever. I've switched to some Noctua ones and it is a world of difference, the grass really was greener on the other side. IF Noctua's too expensive, Bequiet's supposed to be easier on the wallet and almost as good.

Current Build

Well I already have the case and SSD. Right now my budget is $500, in addition to the case and SSD. The graphics card will be a later purchase, too, so that isn't included in the $500 either. Just need to get up and running for recording right now.

I had my heart set on the looks of the Asus itx board and ability to overclock.

Also, I have access to a microcenter.

Just wanting to try over clocking without spending $200 right now. I can get the 7350k for $130 at microcenter. Still taking suggestions though as it seems very unpopular.

No preference on hdd. I just know I can get one around $50.

I'll look at the noctua.

Not sure on the SSD model...

What screen do you have? Resolution? Refresh rate? What kind of games... just an overall description of what you'd like to do with the machine can help, we'll be able to suggest you well considered part lists.

Mostly FPS, I play bass and my brothers play instruments as well, so I'll be doing multi-track recording. Small amounts of multitasking, if any. Web browsing...

Don't have a monitor yet either, probably buy that when I get a gpu. Until then, it's my 1080p TV.

Yeah I heard be quiet fans were nice. I don't think 16gb ram and i7 are in the budget though.

It's expensive and underperforms for what it is.

A quad core I5 (or an 8th gen 6 core I5 will vastly outperform the 2c/2t I3 even with the overclock)

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-8400-vs-Intel-Core-i3-7350K/3939vs3889

Though single core speed is slightly faster, you gain a better multicore speed on the I5-8400 which can improve DX11 and DX12 game quality (<- click for link to techquickie video) as well as improve any other tasks you're running at the same time, be it audio/video rendering, audio recording, video playback, etc...

Hope that clears things up.

It looks great, I just don't have that much to work with. I was looking around $250ish range between cpu and Mobo.

They're saying the 8400 is going to be $310?

Well they'll be back in stock in a couple weeks, I'd say its best to wait a bit, the performance of the i5 8400 is definitely worth the wait!

Oh so it already released. Didn't know that. I'll keep an eye out on micro center, see if they show up soon. Hopefully it'll be in my price range.

Yeah a current gen. one would be out of the question. What about an 4th or 5th gen i5? Do you have access to stores with used parts?

Not that I'm aware of.. but there's a microcenter nearby. 6th and 7th gen parts fairly cheap.

Don't waste the money on used, wait a bit and spend a fraction more on the 8th Gen. Even an i3-8100 is superior to the i3-7350K

New gives you a better cpu with a full 3 year warranty.

I took a look at micro center's stock in Chicago (instead of westmont, which is closer to me) and saw they have 8600ks in stock. I was considering waiting for a little more cash to come in and go for that paired with the Asus Z370-I. But I'd have to wait a lot longer before I get a gpu.

Might be good for you, 1070ti is going to be released in a bit.

What do you think about 7600k vs 8350k since 8th gen i3 are quad cores now?

The coffee lake prices everywhere are ridiculously inflated and I just can't bring myself to spend $300+ on a cpu right now, even if they ARE hexa cores.. Do I really need it?
