I've always had an some kind of problem network related no matter the connection (wired/wireless), ISP or modems and routers. I've used a router + modem, and different modem/wireless router combos in the past. Nowadays I only use wireless devices on my network, connected to a pace c6500 modem and 2,4 ghz router combo provided by the ISP. The wifi signal is very strong anywhere in my apartment and the speed (~10Mbps) is the same as the contract. The problem is that quite often some device (4 to 5 are connected at the same time) or all of them loses internet connection while still being connected to the wifi, requiring to restart the device's wifi or the modem. There are also quite some wifi networks nearby, so channel interference can be a factor i guess. The question is: Should I invest in a external wireless router, maybe a 5ghz one, and have zero problems then or the ISP itself will always keep those problems coming? I'm not planning to spend much on a router if that's the case.

for alot of devices to connect to a single 2.4ghz connection u must enable 40mhz mode, 20mhz is limited to x amount of devices :)

Devices might be disconnecting due to your modem/router over heating. My old Dlink router used to do the same and it stopped after adding a laptop cooler under it. I power the laptop cooler via the USB ports on the router.

And if you want to add better wireless, you dont want to add a router as you got one, the ISP supplied box. You will want an wireless Access Point. As connecting a router to a router can cause double NAT which can cause issues. Though these issues can be stopped if you know how to setup the 2nd route correctly. Also, some routers do have the ability to operate as Access Points. But again you have to do the right configuration. First thing I would do is put your hand on the box you currently have. Does it feel very warm to the touch? If so try cooling it better, see if that make a difference.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
