G'day Guys,

I'm currently in the final stages of research for my first build. To save a long winded post, here is the TL;DR;

  • First time build
  • Currently a University/College student, so will be used for gaming, statistical analysis, general browsing
  • Have a budget of around $1000
  • Will not be overclocking, but got the i5 7600k for the extra 0.3GHz for an extra $20
  • Already got an SSD

Here are the components (all prices are taken from umart):

  • Case Thermaltake Black Core V21 SFF $89
  • CPU Intel Core i5 7600K $299
  • CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED Turbo $49
  • Motherboard Gigabyte B250M-D3H $120
  • Graphics Card GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Windforce 4GB $226
  • RAM Corsair Vengance 8GB 2400MHz (2x4GB)  $132
  • Power Supply Cooler Master B2 Series 500W $56
  • Hard Drive Seagate ST2000DM006 SATA3 2TB  $89
  • CD Drive Asus DRW-24D5MT $22
  • Total $1082

Here is a link to the pcpartspicker page of the proposed build;

I will not be overclocking, but I got the i5 7600k for the extra 0.3GHz for an extra $20 Already got an SSD as well.

you're encouraged to give me suggestions and feedback.

Cheers, iSoldMum4GP

Don't get a 7600K. Get an i5-8400 or a Ryzen 5 1600 with a B350 board, both are much better ;)

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32

Mice: Logitech G Pro X Superlight (main), Logitech G Pro Wireless, Razer Viper Ultimate, Zowie S1 Divina Blue, Zowie FK1-B Divina Blue, Logitech G Pro (3366 sensor), Glorious Model O, Razer Viper Mini, Logitech G305, Logitech G502, Logitech G402

tbh you can overclock without increasing voltage so it wont decrease cpu lifespan, its free performance but each to their own, i would recommend an r5 1600 over this as 4c4t is pretty bad when theres a 6c12t and 6c6t for the same price

i wont recommend the 8400 atm because budget motherboards arent out yet

Agreed, and also if you do go ryzen 1600, you don't need to buy a cooler... and get better ram if you go ryzen. Why not overclocking? if you keep to a fairly capable but not extreme OC with whichever you choose, there's nothing to fear and it's free performance.

Huh, I never knew that... I assume I would over clock to get a slightly higher CPU speed as long as I don't increase the voltage, thus decreasing the life span of my CPU. Thanks for letting me know!

without increasing voltage you are looking at maybe 100 mhz extra, bumping it up by a small amount will allow it to be overclocked a fair bit more

If you keep the voltage within safe limits, say 1.35V for ryzen it'd be unlikely to effect it's lifespan at all IMO. You could possibly even got upto 1.4v safely, but to be on the safe side and for a noob to OCing, I'd stick with 1.35. For reference I am running a 1700 at 1.29vcore at 3.85Ghz with no probs... I would push much further but my limiting factor is cooling ATM.

I've been compairing the Intel Core i5-7600k with the AMD Ryzen 5 1600. After looking at a fair few reviews, I think I might go the AMD 1600. The reviews and benchmarks seem to be overall, very positive!

Have you considered the i5-8400?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
