Hi guys. So my dad just started asking me about one game or another that he definetely wants to play. So I decided to upgrade the family PC. It is an "oldish" HP Compaq 6005 PRO SFF with an Athlon II X2 250, 4gb of ddr3 memory in dual channel configuration, HD 4200 integrated graphics and a 240w rated power supply. My question is, can I stick a GT 1030 in there? It is the perfect option since it offers such a good value and is also low profile. It says that a 300w PSU is recommended for this card, but by system isn't consuming more than 120-140w of power. Will i have issues or am I good to go? What other options do I have to keep it around the same budget or lower? Thanks.

A 750 Ti will definetely crap on the PSU. That isn't a viable option.

Then upgrade the PSU first.

As I said, it IS an OEM HP system, PSU is custom made for the case.

Then I'd say it's time to put that PC in the skip and build a new one, I'd wait for Coffee Lake Pentiums to come out along with B360 boards.

I think it is valid to put a GT 1030 it would give the system the capacity to run old games... the GT 1030 is not far from the GTX 750ti performance either... it is up to you if you really want to go through the hassle...

Finding a small form factor 750ti will be difficult and probably overpriced. I would just say get the gt 1030 as it would consume less power and the cpu will probably still bottleneck

i would say just get the gt 1030 it is way more power friendly and the cpu might still be bottleneck to the gt 1030 but it won't be as bad as the 750ti. Also finding a small form factor 750ti that is not overpriced will be difficult

I do not have that much money to spend. This PC is still totaly capable. I want to add a graphics card powerful enough to put it in the next PC I build for them. That is all. No major costful upgrade needed. I already spent 95% of my money on my actual PC.

I don't think the bottleneck will be that big. It is somewhere at a Pentium E8400 level, so it is still ok. Thanks for your reply. I will wait other answers too.

I agree it wont be big but it would be bigger with a gtx 750ti. I would recommend a passive cooled card as they seem to run cheaper than the ones with a small fan on them.
