R5 8 core: Interesting topic for the WAN show.

GrandFatMan

Interesting. Might be worth delving into a bit on the WAN show.

Some folks who've bought Ryzen 5 1600 or 1600Xprocessors have found that their chips have two more cores than expected, which can only be described as a massive win on the CPU lottery.

These CPUs should have six cores and 12 threads, but reports on Korean forums (spotted by Wccftech) say some users have found they have eight cores (and 16 threads) out of the box.

The processors still run at the clock speeds quoted for the 1600X and 1600, but come with a pair of extra cores.

I think that this was already posted, and that it also was confirmed to be a hoax. just some 1700 CPUs that were renamed.

It's really easy to do this BTW:

just change the value called ProcessorNameString to whatever you want, located here in the registry: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0

  1. Old news
  2. This was a hoax, the CPUs were 1700s that were renamed in the BIOS
  3. Linus will not cover a subject in the WAN Show just because it's mentioned in the thread title

Interesting. It still might be worth a discussion. Seems it was all the cpus are doing it from a certain batch. If it is a hoax. I think still worth a discussion in how flaky the tech news can be. And for the consumer to be aware

It wasn't for linus to read. I put that as I didn't know if there was a sub forum or whatever to put it. And so other people could see I was trying to generate a discussion. I'm fairly new here and to forums in general.

Yeah.

Unfortunately it inherited the "slow clock speed" trait from Ryzen as well.
