Hi!

Coffee lake feels like a good opportunity to upgrade an old system, so here's where I'm at now :

Cabinet: Cooler master HAF 912

PSU: XFX ProSeries Core Edition 750W

CPU: i7-3820

MOBO: ASUS P9X79 LE

RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB DDR3 1600MHz

GPU: GTX 1070 founder's edition

This system was a pre-built, and the only parts that have been swapped are the 1070 (from a GTX 780) and some drives. This is what I want to accomplish:

1. A more silent system, which means I probably want a new case.

2. More / better RAM and a CPU upgrade

So I've never built a computer, which puts me squarely at "amateur" level when it comes to knowledge of components, which is why I come to you for help. My price range is something like 1000 - 1500 USD.

1. Case, I've been looking at Fractal Design R5 and the Corsair Carbide R100, my goal is to reduce fan noise. Are these ones good choices, and if so, should I get better fans than stock?

2. CPU and MOBO. I feel like the i5-8400 is going to be a solid choice as the i7 is twice the price, is this going to be a fair upgrade? Also need some advice on MOBO as I need one with the new socket and this is an area in which I know approximately squat.

3. CPU cooling, do I need a better CPU cooler, or is stock fine?

4. RAM, I see recommendations online for DDR4 2133MHz RAM. Would this be any noticeable improvement over DDR3 1600MHz, should I go to 32GB, or is my current RAM going to be fine?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

You can't use DDR3 in mobo's that support DDR4.

They have different dims so a DDR3 won't fit in a DDR4 slot.

You must buy new RAM.

1: neither of those is silence focused, look at BeQuiet for low noise

2: good choice of CPU, the motherboard im unsure about seeing as this is a very new launch and not a lot of info is out

3: if you want low noise id recomend an air tower, you dont need to go wild with it either, just get something decent and run it at a lower rpm because thats not a super hot chip

4: 2133MHz DDR4 will be slower then 1600MHz DDR3 generally because of the looser timings on DDR4, but it entirely depends on the kits of each. 32GB is overkill as hell, but 16GB i can say is really nice to have

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Found a BeQuiet Dark Base Pro 900, it's more expensive than other towers, but I feel like this is the one component I could keep using across builds. It also looks really good compared to my CoolerMaster monstrosity.

1. Define R5 is a geat / silent / good looking case - go for it. Also the stock fans that come with it are decent and will last some time.

2. i5-8400 is the gamers best choice for now and quite some time in the future. (Duck-Prediction-Well-Done(TM)).

Any board with a LGA1151 socked will take the CPU.

3. Stock will work, but with a silent trimmed case like the R5 you will be better of with a decent aftermarked cooler. With the budget you got you can go skyhigh anyway.

4. RAM speeds are not realy that important as long as they are high enough :-) 2x8GB is pretty much standard and overkill for gaming rigs. If you want more you can always add another 2x8GB  (same type and manufacturer please) if the board you pick supports 4 sltos.

meeeeeeeeeeep - wrong :-) But they got a good Company Name that implies a lot, I got to give them that :-)

the darkbase cases are going to be better noise wise then either of those, just the first brand that came to mind that dosent cheap out on the fans that are included
