Ok, so I'm about to head to my local store to cancel my order on the 8700k (for now). I'm gonna let it settle for a bit and have Intel have more stock and have the prices go down (maybe). The prices for the motherboards are bloody ridiculous along with the processor itself. rushed launch for sure.

Aaaaaaanyways, back to the topic. I'm gonna be going for a Ryzen build for now but will go for the 8700k later down the road. Here's what I configured:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600X 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor  (£184.95 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-D15S 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler  (£68.73 @ Eclipse Computers)
Motherboard: Asus - PRIME X370-PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard  (£135.72 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  (£148.79 @ Aria PC)
Total: £538.19
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I will be OCing to 4Ghz, but I'm not sure whether to go for a 1600 or 1600x... the price between them isn't that huge. Should I go for a B350 board instead since I won't be using SLI anyway? (I'm planning on having just a 1080Ti)

Should I get the Ripjaws V or keep the Corsair Vengeance LPX?

Thanks in advance,

Sean.

I'd just wait till 8700k prices drop to acceptable levels. Unless your current PC is dead, not worth buying Ryzen when you want Coffee.

you will need to check the QVL for the RAM you will be using

most reported you can go only up to 2933MHz

any higher and the system will not boot

as for the CPU

i think if possible you could step up to the 1700 will be sweet when pairing with the 1080Ti

the stock AMD cooler with the 1700 is good enough for mild OC

so you save quite a lot by not picking up the aftermarket cooler

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

which ram do you recommend for ryzen 1600/1600x?

and what about motherboard? x370 or b350?

In addition to what dragoon said it should also be noted that even the D15S has a pretty big height, make sure it fits in your desired case.

my define s will handle the nh-d15s just fine :)

go with ryzen 1600 as it comes with nice stock cooler with less price tag & you will manually overclock so there wont be any difference between 1600 & 1600x. for board, asus strix b 350 f gaming is an amazing one between all the b350s & should be fine with 1600. but do note, if budget aint factor you can get x370 prime plus or x370 strix too which could be a great investment for future. for ram, it seems samsung b die chips tend to overclock better for ryzen & you might find this link useful.

B350 is fine for mild OC. but if you want full blown OC features the X370 is the way to go. Ryzen 7 is best paired with x370. GSkill Flare X are the Ryzen supported RAM.

Go for the R7 1700.
