Hi all!

Winter is coming, and I'm considering upgrading my build, I'm pretty sure the GPU is obsolete, but I'm not sure about the CPU. I can still play most recent games without problems at 60-75fps like COD, BF4, PUBG..

btw, my actual build is:

  • CPU: i5-3570K @4.0Ghz
  • Motherboard: ASUS Maximus V Formula
  • RAM: (2x4gb) Corsair Vengeance 1866
  • GPU: XFX R7970HGHz BE
  • PSU: Enermax Revolution87+ 650w
  • Storage: 500gb SSD + 4TB local HDD
  •

I already found a friend who's interested in buying my used GPU eventually.

Build Plan Guidelines:

1. Budget & Location

Italy, as for the budget I'm open, I have a job and some savings so I can afford to buy a new system like this one, I don't want to waste money if I can just upgrade 1-2 pieces tho.. but if you want a number I can say.. prolly ~600-700€ (considering I think I don't need to buy a new PSU, Storage or Case, I don't think I'll reach 1k. you tell me)

2. Aim

Mostly gaming, COD, Battlefield, Star Citizen... (not DOTA or Overwatch graphic level).

I also do some Blender Rendering as a hobby but so far my scenes are simple enough to be resolved with my GPU (but looks like almost everything works only with CUDAs... :/ )

3. Monitors

3 NEC MultiSync 1880SX, but I only game on the central one and I'm planning on getting a 16:9 if I can find a good prince now that 4K is reaching the consumer market

2020 AMD Build:

Ryzen 3800x - Asus TUF x570 - Crucial Ballistix 16GB 3600cl16 - ROG Strix GTX1070 OC 8G - EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W - Sabrent Rocket 1TB

2012 Intel Build:

Intel i5-3570k @4.0Ghz - Asus Maximus V Formula - Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1866 - XFX HD7970 GHz - Enermax Revolution87+ 650w - Crucial MX500 500GB

I'd go for this, new, fast, 6 core CPU with 12 threads for gaming + streaming. If no plans for content creation drop to a Ryzen 5 1400 and get a GTX 1070 if you can.

Why are you even upgrading if you're getting 60-75FPS in AAA titles? HD7970 is not obsolete. It offers performance similar to low and modern GPUs but it's still a great card. At most, sell your 7970 and grab a 6GB GTX 1060 or an RX 480/580. Maybe a GTX 1070 if you can find one for a good price.

Hi, sorry for the late reply but I've been busy with work

you're right I'm not in an immediate need to upgrade but since I notice that I get few dips on latest games and I wanted to be ready for this winter upcoming titles.

the 7970 was expensive at the time but worth the price since it kept up very good with performance even if it's lacking newer technologies I guess :/

I can sell the card for probably around 100€ (something lower market price anyway since he's a friend)

sadly with the boosted prices (and literally almost any card out of stock on the Italian Amazon) it's hard to even compare the price range to performances. grrr

No, it isn't. It performs on par with a 1050Ti, which performs the same as a GTX 770/680, and the GTX 960 performs slightly worse than the 770/680 and 1050Ti. GTX 780 isn't much better, but it IS better.

OP - Since you're selling the HD7970 anyway, it obviously makes sense to buy a new GPU, so just spend around 300e for a 6GB GTX 1060, or maybe, if you really want, grab a GTX 1070 for around 450e.

Fine Wine Man

Depends on the game still of course, but the 7970 has held up pretty well. It's more on par with an RX 560

"

Let's say we are going for 60 FPS in TW3.

It smokes the 780 in Star Wars Battlefront, one of the most beautiful games ever made.

And here is Far Cry 4 :)

Look, even a few years ago it was RIGHT UP with the 780 in BF4!

Alrighty then, let's use your source and compare.

Here's the GTX 780 video so we can compare performance. Since the 780 wasn't tested in Mass Effect, we'll start with BF1. 39FPS avg for the 7950, 62FPS avg for the 780. Seems the 780 is the clear winner, huh?

Now RE7, unfortunately they're tested with different settings in each video, but that's okay. First look at the HD7950 results in RE7, less than a 10% improvement over the 1050Ti. And the 780, about a 20% improvement over the 1050Ti. Safe to say the 780>7950 in RE7.

Skip Dirt since the 780 wasn't tested in it, and we'll go straight to For Honor. Again, like with RE7, completely different settings. Again though, we have the 1050Ti to compare so it's all good. At medium settings, the 7950 is 20% slower than the 1050Ti. At extreme settings, the 780 is 40% faster than the 1050Ti. Again, safe to say the 780 wins over the 7950 here.

Next Prey. Again, different settings. We can use the 1050Ti to compare again if you want but I think you're seeing the pattern now? I mean, or there's just the fact that the 780 is tested with higher settings and still provides more FPS than the 7950 anyway, so is obviously better.

I don't think I need to continue.

BF4 seems like a crazy result compared to techspot's benchmarking of a 780 in that game at a lower resolution, not reaching the same FPS, might just be the area tested, or a CPU thing, or I don't know what, as 780 SLI isn't hitting 120fps as he's reporting.

Ultra_168.png

about a 10fps difference in 3 of the rest, with a tie in just cause 3.

But it's certainly in the same ball park a good deal of the time. Kinda puts it's on it's tier.

the i5 will still be alright for 60hz gaming. Probably don't need to upgrade it just yet, though the GPU is overkill for 1080p 60hz.

It absolutely isn't. 20% better in Crysis 3 AT 1440P, and 40% better in BF4 at 1440p is not "the same ball park". And as we seen from the Hardware Unboxed benchmarks, 60% faster in BF1 at 1080p. RE7, over 10% faster for the 780, but keep in mind RE7 tends to favour AMD GPUs. For Honor, over a 755 increase for the GTX 780 over the 7950. Lastly, Prey, about a 75% increase with the 780 over the 7950.

So because the 7950 was once a good deal that puts it on the same tier as a GPU that is significantly faster in a lot of situations? Don't think so. Whether or not the 7950 was a good deal at any point is irrelevant. The FACT is that the GTX 780 IS a better GPU, hands down.

if I buy a new GPU I'll get one from this gen, I don't think I'll buy an older (but cheaper) gpu and miss on newer features.

and since AMD seems to be all out of stock here or absurd prices for the Vega lineup (over €600 ) I'll probably look for team green and maybe get some luck with CUDA cores on Blender renders smh.

but I've read that DDR4 memory, differently from DDR3, have real impact on gaming performance (apparently?), but as for now if I can mount a 1060 and not have a bottleneck in my CPU/RAM fine! I'll upgrade later after january when the Ryzen/Intel dust settle and prices stabilize.

Any model in particular? I don't like blower design, since I have a huge case with the side panel open I'll go for 2-3 fan design probably. higher the frequency the better I guess.
