Gpu upgrade for 144hz

Hi 

 

so I currently have a Acer XG270HU 27" with a 1070 gtx, I want to know if I should upgrade from the 1070 to a 1080 / 1080 TI, I'm looking at the MSI gaming x edition which heald's rather good average compared to the other manufactures.

 

I mainly use my rig for gaming which ever AAA flavor of the month, but most of my time is spent on pubg,dota 2,cs,BF1 and most probably destiny 2.

 

so  want to know is it a good upgrade choice or rather wait for the new GFX range to release before forking out almost a $1000 at the current ZAR (13.60 zar) to dollar (1$) exchange rate.

I would say wait. Your 1070 should push games pretty far and take full advantage of your monitor. The 1080's are typically recommended for those who want higher resolutions (4k).

I'd say the 1080ti. PUBG doesnt like weak graphics cards, pushing 144fps in 1440p will need the 1080ti.

 

Vega is still terribly expensive and Volta was delayed (not even leaks of gaming cards are out), so just buy the card now.

Eh I would wait for the new volta if you want a substantial increase.  The 1080 is $100 over the 1070 and the 1080ti is $250 more than the 1070.  You'd obviously get better performance with a 1080ti over a 1070, but i don't think it's worth it with volta around the corner (6 months hopefully)

That's cause pubg is hella unoptimized for anything

yea watched that same video, but thats rather out dated as the engine got a massive overall and I'm already seeing much better fps on pubg. issues is I have this lovely 2k screen with 144hz but 75% of the time I can't even reach 144fps to use the full potential of the screen

he is CPU limited, look at the GPU load % it's bouncing all the time anywhere from 50% to 85%...that game is not optimized and a GTX 1070 would offer similar performance.

In the air, yeah. After the player lands on the ground though it clearly is the GPU, staying at 99% most of the time.

Not many gpus can run 1440p at 120+fps all the time on ultra settings, so I say you're fine for now because I don't think any combination of gpus in existence can reach 144fps (weirdly specific number) at 1440p 144hz

Most of the games i play run at 120-150fps easily which is considered amazing on 1440p with a single 1080Ti if that helps. I find the duo combo to be amazing for now. Until 4k gets mainstream 144hz which is unlikely, the 1440p remains best in best for the time being.

 

If you are playing PUBG, don't expect that high due to the unoptimization of the actual game itself, maybe in the 90-100s? Even so that should give you nominally better smoother frames overall rather than a consistent 60, if you could drop ultra to high it might benefit you a bit more since Ultra tends to kill frames often [unless you dont mind floating lower a bit for that game]
