I am going to buy a new power supply and have a few questions.  After reading both the psu tier list (updated) and the what is 80 efficiency thread, I still would like a few questions answered.  With a r5 1600 and an rx 460 in my system, will i need gold+ efficiency or is bronze enough? I will eventually get a 1080/980ti in the future (or gen 2 volta in a few years) and would like to know if I would benefit more from 80+ bronze or 80+ gold efficiency.

I have my eyes on these right now:

If you are upgrading then do get 80+ Gold ones.

I'd pick the 550w Supernova G3 out of all these.

The B3 is clearly out of the match here since it's for budget builds.

The Seasonic M12II got degraded to tier 4. @STRMfrmXMN something wrong with them? Anyway, if you are using a high end graphics card in the future then you should aim for better ones.

The Thermaltake Smart Pro is tier 3 PSU. Not as good as the other two. This one is out.

The Seasonic Focus Plus and EVGA G3 are both good, but G3 is cheaper.

Always buy equipment with upgrading in mind. Don't paint yourself into a corner with "just enough" for your current build. With that in mind, on NEWEGG.COM the supernova g3 750w gold is on sale for $99.00  ($30.00 off). Grab that and that will future proof your rig for power.

Yeah i don't need to spend $40 more just for 200w that I most likely will never need to use @Shocktruppen

I think I will get the seasonic one then because I plan on upgrading in a few months.  If one is cheaper, I will rethink my options but I'm not buying in the next month, more like the next 2

$11.00 MORE THAN THE G-3 550   BE CHEAP THAT ALWAYS WORKS FOR PC BUILDS LOL.

Well at $80 I don't think a 80+ gold seasonic fully modular psu is cutting it short.  I doubt I will ever need 750 before I would need a completely new build, and if I get a 1080/next gen volta in the next 4 years, I won't need 750w.  It will be after college that I would rebuild my pc and from there I would buy a larger psu, because I'd probably try a massive build (if i can afford it)

From those, the EVGA G3 seems OKish though it's on the louder side and Seasonic Focus PLUS.

The M12II-520 Bronze is garbage....

Yes, everything.

Loud as hell, group regulated at a price you can get DC-DC from competitors, lacking protection.

It's old and totally not worth it by todays standard.

And something like a Cooler Master Master Watt Lite is equally good as the S12II, better protected, less noisy and cheaper...

And something like be quiet Pure Power 400 or Corsair CX450 is way better in almost every aspect...

Well, the totally overrated caps look better on the M12II but what does it matter if the rest is lacking??

ok. Then use this site it will tell you what you need then.

https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

PSU calculators are bullshit, they just add the TDP of any component. They calculate somewhat between 25-50W per HDD.

If a HDD would consume as much it needs some serious heatsinking and cooling. But take a look at most HDDs! Do they look like they have some serios heatsinking enough for 50W?? No they don't!

And yes, a HDD can consume 50W - for a fraction of a second when the motor starts spinning. If it spins the consumption is around 5-10W...

And in the end the Calculator throws around numbers like 600W or more and in reality you'd be good with a good quality 300-350W unit (wich doesn't exist)...

So stop the calculators.

They are totally wrong if you don't know how to use them.

And if you know how to use them, you don't need them!

The be quiet PSU Calculator in quick/easy mode (just add CPU + GPU, NOTHING ELSE!) is somewhat OKish...

Could you stop that shit please and troll elsewhere?

He's not trolling, he's correct. PSU calculators literally spit up a number based on the TDP of your components. For my 4770S and GTX 970 system it recommends a 650G1 (the Outervision calculator) which is A. more than double what my system draws, and B. is a terrible PSU for the money and shouldn't be bought for any reason.

And geez, if anything, looking through this thread, you're most certainly the one trolling here by throwing out the advice of reputable forum members with your tongue sticking out and an "L" on your head.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Of those the Focus or the G3 would be best. I'd get the Focus myself as the G3 is noisy for what it is. Either will do fine though and are the best among the options you listed here.

Good to know. That was my intended psu purchase
