I have been looking around for an answer to this question, but to no avail.  If I have an Nvidia graphics card, do I need a G-Sync monitor to prevent screen tearing (and not use v-sync) or can I use a free-sync monitor?  There aren't many 1440p ultrawides with G-Sync, so I need to know.  If screen tearing doesn't happen with an Nvidia GPU and Free-Sync combo, what benefits does G-Sync have?

If you have a nVidia GPU and it's a G Sync Compatible card,  then you can take advantage of a G Sync Monitor.  Free Sync only works with AMD cards.  It's Their version of G Sync.

So again  do not  buy a free sync monitor with your nVidia GPU

Screen tearing generally doesn't happen with higher Hz monitors.  We'd have to first talk about what causes screen tearing.  We're eliminating screen tear by having a faster monitor that can keep up with how many frames your GPU will spit out.

Free Sync and G Sync are similar -- but they're from the same tree.

Just now, Will Webster said:

Would a monitor with Free-Sync likely have V-Sync or Fast-Sync as well?

V-Sync has nothing to do with what monitor you've got.

Fast-Sync works only with NVIDIA GPUs.

V-Sync introduces input lag so it is really bad for multiplayer games, especially competitive ones.

Don't worry too much about screen tearing if you don't know what it is.

People don't notice screen tearing unless they go looking for it and even now i never notice it when i turn off my g-sync.
