Radeon in general

Why does AMD always gotta catch up to Nvidia. Are there any reasons why they can't come up with better products in the first place? With their recent overpriced nuclear power plant Vega which is late and not so great in games, I think that this is not a suitable business model. Anyone agrees?

Less moolah to play with. I think that's why Intel has had such a large lead as well, early one they were the best and now lots of people don't even consider AMD (I didn't when I got my first GPU, a 1050 Ti), even though they are catching up really fast. Intel and Nvidia just have massive R&D budgets, and have probably patented everything under the sun, so AMD has to invent new tech, not just improve on old stuff like I&N.

The answer is simple - money. Check how much AMD & Nvidia have for their R&D and then consider that AMD also combats Intel in the CPU market

1. They have 2 fronts to fight on, rivals on both sides got a lead in tech on AMD in the first place

 

2. Its rivals make a LOT more profit, so less R&D money for AMD

 

3. Position in market. AMD in the past couldnt get rid of the label of being alternative to Intel and Nvidia. A bit like buying a copy rather than the real deal.

 

4. Reputation. Those who dont know much about hardware (otherwise known as dum****) surely knows Intel, and maybe Nvidia. Not AMD though.

^^ Exactly, Nvidia is an amazing company which deliver amazing poducts, and now i want them to release a 120hz 4K Virtual Reality Headset, which should IMHO be wireless, with 120 degree field of view, and be compatible with SteamVR, Oculus VR along with oculus touch controllers and Vive controlers as well...and also support for Gsync variable refresh technology, for this product, i would be ready to pay 2000$ CAD right on the spot.

 

I must admit though, ryzen is great...256$ for an R5-1600 right now, if my CPU or board or ram die i'm getting this with 2x8GB DDR4

This was never a problem until the Rx 300 series. Up until then, AMD did a pretty good job of matching Nvidia stride for stride for nearly a decade.

Aernt the AMD CPU divisions and Radeon GPU divisions separate from each other in terms of finances?

Maybe, but I don't understand how that would work unless RTG and AMD were two completely separate companies independent from one another.

They were at one point. And since they dont exactly cross eachother unlike when cable companies merge, I had heard that they were still kinda two separate entities under the AMD umbrella (heard this verbally so my recollection could be wrong or the source could have been full of bull)

ATI, yes. RTG, no. ATI was bought by AMD in 2006, and the ATI brand was dissolved in late 2010. Between 2010 and 2015, the GPU division simply operated under the AMD moniker until mid 2015 when they rebranded that division as Radeon Technologies Group. They're still owned by AMD, but I don't think the logistics of funding was ever disclosed in full detail. I personally don't see RTG existing financially without AMD. My guess is that AMD might have siphoned off some of the finances from RTG to stay afloat long enough to release Ryzen, because it wasn't until AMD started suffering that RTG started falling behind.

Yes because AMD acquired ATI several years ago, and so the two operate independently of one another which is why you've seen bigger strides in AMD's GPU division vs. their CPU division over the last 6 years.

Interesting, although from what I've heard on the WAN show there are still engineers from "back from the ATI days" so I imagine the new RTG group consists of a lot of the ATI guys. Though thats not to conclude that this means there two separate entities under one umbrella (I didnt know ATI was dissolved at any point)

Yeah, it happened right before the release of the HD6000 series. The last generation of video cards released that had the ATI label was the HD5000 series.
