Xeon Build

R34 Nissan GTR

So basically, I found a clearance deal at my local Canada Computers for a Xeon E3 -1230 V5 for $200 CAD. First of all, is this a good deal? I think I read that it performs similarly to an I7-7600, so I wanted to see if thats true. I would use it for coding, gaming, and video editing. The board in the parts list at the bottom is the cheapest compatible board but it seems pretty nice, and together they still come out cheaper than the previously mentioned I7 with a similar board. What I really want to know is if going with a Xeon will have many large downsides. ( I know that the GPU in there is underpowered compared to the CPU, just a baseline)

That isn't a terrible deal but that is still kind of expensive for a xeon build

Also no there are no downsides to having a xeon for what you are using it for. It will work like any other cpu

But Ryzen can give more while being cheaper.

Not saying that Xeons are bad for daily use, many people use them just like a locked chip. The thing is that most old Xeon went to commercial use first, then got sold out and ended up on the hands on general consumers.. This means their attractiveness is the much lower price since they are often replaced and sold out in bulk. That's why no one uses new Xeons in their new computers.

If you want a really cheap but good xeon build look for a x5650 on ebay and a cheap x58 motherboard. You can often find cpu mobo combos for around $100-$200 which is the price of your motherboard in that part list and it will run just as well esppecially if you overclock it

I agree with this. If you are getting a xeon then don't use a newer one. Get ryzen instead or go for a older xeon that you can get for a quarter of the price of that one

I wanted to go for a Ryzen 5 1600, but this seemed like a better deal.

It's similar to the i7-6700. Just get the r5 1400 or 1600 as they are the better value. I had the 1220 v5 and was deeply dissapointed by it and intel.

I actually work at a computer store ( we sell mostly refurb laptops and pc's nothing really gaming oriented) and we have those there a believe so I could get a good deal on one and have thought about it in the past, but I'm just kinda concerned about the older CPU.

The older cpu is probably 15% less performance than some of the newer equivalent CPUs now.

those older Dell mini towers are solid

if dellrefurbished can sell a i7-3770 and 4770 based system for less than 400$ you should pick those up asap - online they sell out crazy fast

Don't worry about it being "old"

My cpus are six years old but they work great. Age does not necessarily mean it will perform worse than anything else. The quality in which it was made determines that.

The setup you have linked above will do just fine for whatever you want it to do. The only problem is for that money you could get something a little better. Sometimes the convenience of having the parts handy can outweigh that though and that is up to you

Really? I know it would crush multi threaded workloads, but for gaming I didn't think so. Now that I think about it though with a decent overclock it would probably win even there, but I still don't think any more than 1.5x the performance. Plus, it's almost $300, but I think the performance per dollar might still be better. I guess I'll have to look more as I just kinda assumed it would perform better than the Ryzen chip.

If you want to just play games get a cheap pre-built with a sandy bridge or newer i5/i7 and get a gpu that's equivalent for your gaming desires. You save money and you get to play games well. Games aren't that hard to run. What games are you playing? Also, in my experience my R5 1600 was better than my e3-1220 v5.

Actually, now that I think about it, I remember doing exactly what you told me to do with the 9010 for a kid off my own recommendation lmao. I think be bought a 1050ti and a 500w PSU elsewhere, and I popped those and some extra ram in. I guess I just really want to buy new lmao. If the performance difference is only 15% though I'll ask my boss about the possibility of ordering me one with an i7.
