well both apple and microsoft and like everyone is now using GUI's rigth ;) and you don't have to pay apple to make a gui so it seems like some compromise is made ;).
The whole thing will get you into the legallity behind patents. Apple believed they had the patent on a gui while microsoft claimed something like this couldn't be patented. It's been a while since I read about it so I'm a bit rusty on it too. but from what I remember it's one of the cornerstone legal cases in operating systems and even patents in software design. and a lot of compromises had to be made by both parties.
It's a very interesting topic and you could also delve a bit into how hp (I believe) and microsoft came to their first operating system with a gui, because this was actually kind of stole from some other compagny as well.... some lawsuite where filed there too and compromises where made.
If any of those descissions in the day would have gone differently probably everyone would be using a mac or apple pc now and chances are the technology world would look a lot different.

Another idea in the suggestion box, thanks, looks like a really interesting topic.

sorry for the double post but to lazy to edit the previous post and it's a completly different idea.
if you want something different you might want to watch some talks from Jason Scott on youtube or something. He is THE internet archivist and has wonderfull stories about all kinds of things which happened on the internet. If you watch some of his talks you might get a nice idea for a subject. If you'd contact him you even have a chance he might provide you with stuff or even give an interview, that guy loves history and will greet every new internet/computer historian.

Here's a little example:

  • Microsoft vs open source?
  • Different recording media, all the way from VHS and BetaMax, covering DVD- and DVD+ to Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD.
  • Netflix and major cable companies in US. Though that one is newer than 2007.

E: Also early-mid-90s browser wars. Netscape vs Internet Explorer (vs Safari) (I don't remember if Safari was part of that)
