Your phone "talks" to the service provider first before your connection reaches the server. No way to lie to the service provider if the truth has to pass through them first.

Ok, this occured to me this morning in the shower. As we have VPN's to "spoof" our location, couldn't the same be done for mobile phones?

What i'm talking about is this: Lets say I'm going on holiday to America, which is outside the no-roam zone, meaning I would have to pay charges. Is there a way for me to spoof my phones location back to the uk? Is this even possible?

Impossible.

 

VPN hide your location by routing your access towards a server in the location you want to "pretend" to be in. Therefore you cant spoof the service provider.

Thats what I'm saying, but couldnt you route your traffic through to the other country and then send it off to the cell tower? For example, you route your traffic between two nodes and the second one sends your signal to the nearest cell tower?
