I am building a new Ryzen pc with a Ryzen 1700, and a GTX 1080 ti.  I'm looking at just getting a 4x8 GB RAM kit, but I'm wondering if it will make all that much difference to spend the extra money on a 4x16 GB RAM kit.  From what I have seen on the market lately, it is about double for a 64GB kit compared to a 32GB kit.  So it doesn't seem it would be too much of a waste, just overkill.

I would recommend going with 64GB of RAM. This is because with those pieces of high end hardware they could benefit (to some extent) having 64GB of RAM compared to 32GB of RAM. Although it really depends on what you are going to be doing with the system.

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

Really depends what you're doing. If you're going to be using a maximum of 13GB of RAM at full load, it won't make any difference at all. If you're going to be using 47GB all the time, having 32GB will cripple performance.

Yes!

For me, more slower RAM is much preferred over less faster RAM.  For example, 32GB DDR4-2400 would be better than 64GB DDR4-4266, for me.  Same with 64GB DDR4-2400 vs 32GB DDR4-3866.

I could definitely make use of 64GB RAM. :P

I'd prefer waiting for prices to drop back down, if at all possible.

Some gaming, significant 3d modeling software (I'm an engineering student, and use multiple), and I've been dabbling in virtualization a little, (my current rig can't handle much, but I want to try more).  I have been using school computers for my 3d modeling, and that is the biggest reason I'm building a new computer.

If you decide to go with four sticks (4x8GB or 4x16GB), I would recommend choosing something from your board's QVL. Ryzen boards are picky regarding ram compatibility when only using two sticks. I've heard people have difficult times with four sticks. It's definitely something one should research, instead of just ordering whatever 4 DIMM kit happens to be on sale.

While it doesn't have much regarding 16GB DIMMS, http://www.overclock.net/t/1627555/ryzen-memory-ic-collection-thread would be a nice cross-reference when choosing based on your board's QVL. Samsung B-Die chips are known to work best with Ryzen builds.

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x  Board: Asus PRIME X570-P  Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8) DDR4-3000  Case: Fractal Design Define S

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070  SSD: HP EX950 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME  HDD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM

PSU: SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 750W  Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4  Monitor: Viotek GFT27DB 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz
