Stupid computer...

I'm trying to get my old computer up and running, and it's saying no, I was wondering what else I could do with it. I was planning on making it a good internet browser, word processor, some light gaming, and a little bit of video editing. The specs are below, as are the OSes I've tried. I'm beginning to think my board got fried a little recently, or the processor isn't fully compatible.

 

ASUS P4V8X-X

Intel Pentium 4 HT 2.4GHz

1GB RAM (1x1GB DDR 400MHz)

ATI Radeon X1650 Pro PowerColor Edition (256MB GDDR2, 64-bit bus, AGP 8X)

WD1600AAJB (primary master)

WD1200BB (secondary master, they don't like to be on the same cable)

 

List of OSes I've tried without any success:

Xubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Elementary OS .2

Joli OS 1.2

Windows Vista Ultimate

Ubuntu 11.04

 

I considered XP, but I know it's going dark April 18, 2014, as I remember. But by then I might have enough money for a new rig.

 

Any ideas? I was going to try Linux Mint tonight.

probably it is your rams that is causing issues ,try memtest86 on a bootable device or CD

I know it's not the RAM. It was working fine before the processor, so I'm thinking it's the processor. I'll have to find my old one.

You can't?!? I've installed W7 in a P III with its integrated with all drivers... and you can't ?

But CPU may be your problem, can't see a P IV at 2.4 GHz with HT in CPU support for this mobo...

And for 2 drives on IDE must be cable select+slave (If you haven't tried...)

 

Anyway try to get another CPU for it (don't pay for it, If you've to pay it isn't worth )

I have to think it's the processor, since it had a 2.8GHz Northwood (non-HT) and it worked fine. I did everything to put both drives on one ribbon, but still didn't work (both came up as ? and they were reported as 250GB).

Check Bios if there's nothing crapped down, take a look at IDE drives and disable sata if needed (in some very old mobos OSes can't be installed in a Sata drive )

Everything is stock in the BIOS. Just changed the date and time to the proper values. When I have to install, I turn it off, unplug the secondary master ad plug in a DVD drive.

I'm getting a job this New Years (my first one. Yay!) and I already have steammmmmmmm.

 

Supposedly, this job will net $12-$15 an hour (forgot which) and I can work 10 hours a week.

Not yet. But honestly, do you think it would be worth it to install XP then yank it off the net when April rolls around?
