It's always better to suck it up and do a complete reinstall. Not fun, but a fresh copy of Windows is better than trying to clone.

depending on how large the ssd you purchase, what is the total drive capacity and the used space of your current hard drive?

You could always copy all of your personal files out to another drive if you have another. Then the drive cloning should work fine as long as your system files fit into the SSD.

Your SSD may have software that migrates your os to your SSD (like Samsung Magician for Samsung SSDs).

As long as you use cloning software, ususally comes with the SSD, you can move it over to that drive. If you want to use a regular HDD I'm sure there's software for that as well, it's basically making a system backup. DO NOT JUST COPY YOUR WINDOWS FILES, that will not work.
