4 Cores and a motherboard capable of overclocking. If you don't want to overclock or don't have the cooling for it you can get an A320 chipset board for a bit cheaper. Not worth buying a Ryzen with more cores or threads unless you need the extra cores. If you have the budget you can also go for the 1300x for better single thread performance but it won't make a large difference.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

What is your budget? You should wait a month or so until coffee lake comes out.

Anyways if you don't want to wait get a Ryzen 1600 they do perform better then the 1400 and 1500X in gaming as games are starting to use 6 cores or more.

https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/8211/amd-ryzen-5-1600-1400-cpu-review/index7.html

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-5-1600-cpu,5073-6.html

Many titles where a 1600 beats a 1500X today and games are getting more multithreaded every year.

Edit i will say the reason why people think games still use 4 cores only is over intel simply having beast IPC and higher clock speeds making the jump from 4 to 6 ryzen cores seem less important but digital foundry did a video comparing the I5 at 4.8Ghz and the Ryzen 1600 at 3.8Ghz(can almost do on stock cooler) and the I5 lost in gaming.
