So I'm un Canada and building for a friend the purpose of the machine is light to medium gaming and general purpose (so school and watching YouTube)

Don't get an i5, get a Ryzen 5 1400/1600 with a B350 board. It's much better ;)

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k7LDYr look at my build. Got it today and battlefield 1 is running at 55 (lowest) fps 1080p ultra settings with low shadows!

Here's my update for current metagame. Thx for the feedback ^^ 

Ryzen really benefits from higher RAM speeds. Try to get 2800-3200 MHz. The stock cooler that comes with the 1600 isn't that much worse than the 212 Evo. So don't bother with the 212.

Get this instead, playing 1080p even at ultra setting wont be much issue & every other aspect.
